The country’s first centralised AC railway terminal is all set to come up in Bengaluru. South Western Railway (SWR) officials said Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal Bengaluru (Byappanahalli Third Coaching Terminal) will be ready by the end of February. “At present, only a few spaces like retiring rooms at railway stations are air-conditioned, but this terminal will have centralised AC system. This will offer an airport-like experience for rail passengers,” said E Vijaya, chief public relations officer, SWR. The Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation (IRSDC) is planning centralised AC system in stations like Habibganj... more...
in Madhya Pradesh and Gandhinagar in Gujarat under the public-private-partnership model. The Byappanahalli terminal’s facade is designed on the lines of Bengaluru airport. Currently, 164 pairs of express trains and 109 pairs of passenger trains are being operated from KSR Bengaluru City and Yeshwantpur terminals. The new terminal, which was sanctioned in 2015-16, is expected to help SWR operate more trains from Bengaluru. Work on the terminal, which was supposed to be completed in December 2018, missed several deadlines. The Rs 314-crore station building of 4,200sqm will cater to a daily footfall of 50,000. The terminal has seven platforms apart from eight stabling lines and three pit lines. Every day, 50 trains can be operated from the terminal. Better amenities The terminal will have parking facilities for 250 cars, 900 two-wheelers, 50 autorickshaws, five BMTC buses and 20 cabs. “The terminal will have upper-class waiting hall, VIP lounge with digital real-time passenger information system and food court. The escalators and lifts will connect seven platforms to facilitate passenger movement. Foot over-bridge along with two subways will link all platforms,” said an official. A water recycling plant of 4 lakh-litre capacity will be installed. However, poor accessibility to the terminal might inconvenience passengers. “We are excited about a new terminal with airport-like facilities. This will decongest KSR Bengaluru and Yeshwantpur railway station. But major concerns are poor road and public transport connectivity,” said rail enthusiast Abhishek R.

Visakhapatnam: While nearly 20-30% of all train commuters from Visakhapatnam station travel to and from Bengaluru, the station does not have a single regular train between Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru. Many people travelling between the cities, mostly techies have to depend of passing through the city railway station or on special trains operated occasionally. Currently,... more...
a total of six trains pass between railway station and Bengaluru. All these trains come from either Odisha or West Bengal. Of the six trains, only two— Bhubaneswar-Bengaluru Prasanti Express and Howrah-Yesvantpur Express run daily. N Gajapathi Rao, member of the East Coast Railway (ECoR), zonal consultative committee told TOI that it is unfortunate that there are no direct trains running between Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru. “The city has direct trains to smaller cities like Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Hatia, Tatanagar and Machilipatnam, but not to Bengaluru,” he said. “The railways introduced Prasanti Express between Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru in 1998. But the point of origin was later shifted to Bhubaneswar in 2006,” Rao told TOI. The railways operated a special train between Visakhapatnam and Yeswantpur for the last few years. The train received good patronage from passengers. But the railway decided to stop it in September 2018, informed P Ashok, a software engineer from MVP Colony. Sources in the railways admitted that a direct train to Bengaluru is necessary to meet the rush of passengers. “We have direct trains to Chennai and Hyderabad from Visakhapatnam, but not to Bengaluru. Nearly 20-30% commuters travel to that part of the country. We hope that there will be a direct train between Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru, once the SCoR is operational,” a railway official said.

Railways looking at airline pricing model: Lohani "The dynamic fare in airlines is really dynamic. It goes up and also comes down, decided by the demand and supply scenario", adds Lohani Shine... more...
Jacob | New Delhi Last Updated at October 6, 2017 02:14 IST The much-hyped dynamic pricing system that invited a lot of criticism for the Indian Railways may soon be converted into an airline-like model. This could mean that railway fares would go down during lean seasons.
Ashwani Lohani, the newly-appointed railway board chairman, said the railways were relooking at the new pricing system. Though a railway cadre official, Lohani was Air India chairman when he moved to the Railway Board in August, and, therefore, has seen the airline pricing model closely.
“I personally was not happy with the way dynamic pricing has been structured. We have to really look at the way airlines are doing it,” Lohani said in an interview.
The new system of pricing called flexi-fare or dynamic pricing was launched on September 9, 2016, on 142 premium trains, including the Rajdhanis, Shatabdis and Durontos.
The pricing system, based on the models used by cab aggregators, had faced wide criticism and led to low occupancy levels since airlines became a cheaper option for passengers.
“The dynamic fare in airlines is really dynamic. It goes up and also comes down, decided by the demand and supply scenario. If a festival is coming up, demand goes up, the fare goes up, while it goes down as well. Airlines also provide offers like one plus one when there is less demand. We have to look into something similar,” he added.
For six months the flexi-fare system was in place last year, the railways made an additional revenue of about Rs 240 crore. Occupancy of these trains dropped considerably. While occupancy was 95 per cent in the Rajdhanis, it was 75-77 per cent in the Shatabdis and about 82 per cent in the Durantos in July 2017.
Under this pricing model, only the first 10 per cent of the tickets sold in premium trains will be available at the original listed price. After that, for every 10 per cent tickets sold, the fare goes up by 10 per cent. However, after the sale of 50 per cent of tickets, when fares are 50 per cent more than the original prices, there is no further hike.
Lohani added that an effort was being made to improve passenger services. As part of this, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is set to take over the catering operations of trains which have pantry cars serving food on board. However, he said, the first priority for railways would be the safety of passengers.
“We have to realise that we have an inadequacy of infrastructure. We will not permit any unsafe conditions in our tracks in railway stations. We will be having sufficient funds for the same,” Lohani added.
Lohani took over as chairman after 23 people died in a train derailment at Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. The railway administration has been under public pressure for a series of accidents, including a stampede on September 28 at Mumbai’s Elphinstone station railway foot overbridge that killed 23 people.
“The recent Elphinstone incident was a sad thing for us. The fact remains that the station is totally packed at peak hours. A series of measures have been taken by the railways. In the next one year, we will build a lot of foot overbridges,” he added.
On railway finances, Lohani said pension liabilities were a cause of concern. The railways fund their salary and pension bill out of their own resources unlike other government departments.
