Demonstration in Sainthia demanding train operation

The demand for launching trains in the district is getting stronger. A few days ago, a local voluntary organization had given a memorandum

to the station manager of Sainthia demanding the introduction of trains at various places in the district, including Sainthia. The members of the organization staged a sit-in protest at Sainthia station again on Friday as there was no positive response. They were accompanied by some locals and hawkers.

Sainthia is an important junction of Howrah-Rampurhat and Andal-Sainthia railways. Besides, it is also one of the business centers of the district. Local traders go to different places including Kolkata and Howrah to buy goods on those two railways. People from large areas of the district also catch trains in Sainthia. Thousands of people have been in dire straits since the train stopped at Lockdown. After the launch of daily local from Howrah and Sealdah, the people of the district were full of hope. But, the railways are breaking the dam of patience of the hawkers from the commuters by waiting for no announcement.

On behalf of the local voluntary organization, Pritam Das, Hridoy Bittar, Nilanjan Das said, “No train has been announced in this district so far. On November 8, we sent a letter to the General Manager of Eastern Railway and the Ministry of Railways through Sainthia Station Master demanding to run a local train. However, protests were staged on this day as there was no work.

Demonstrations were also staged on the railway line on this day. In addition to paying allowances to hawkers when trains are closed, demands were also made to stop some express trains at various stations in the district, including Sainthia. According to the protesters, if the train movement is not started immediately, it will be democratic in the coming days

The method will block all lines and lead to a larger movement. Station Master Pulak Roy said, "The higher authorities have already drawn attention to the demand. Will be returned. "

Sep 03 (02:25)   500 trains, 10,000 stops could go in ‘reimagined’ post-Covid timetable

bh4rtiy4r4il^~   252 news posts
Entry# 4703137   News Entry# 417451         Tags   Past Edits
Some 500 regular trains will be discontinued and 10,000 stops across the Indian Railways’ network will be erased in a new timetable for operations that will be adopted once the pandemic ends and services return to normal.

The Railways expect to increase their annual earnings by more than Rs 1,500 crore through this new “zero-based timetable”. This estimated extra earning will come without having to raise fares or other charges – it will be a byproduct of the timetable, and will happen as a result of operational policy tweaks, according to internal
...

projections of the Ministry of Railways.

The new timetable will make room to run 15 per cent more freight trains on exclusive corridors at higher speeds. The average speed of passenger trains is projected to increase by around 10 per cent across the network.

The zero-based timetable, so named because it seeks to re-imagine operations from scratch, has been developed by the Railways along with experts from IIT-Bombay. Work started during the nationwide lockdown, when the suspension of passenger services provided an unprecedented opportunity to rethink operations without having to run trains at the same time. The making of this modern operating tool was a top priority of the Railways, which was monitored at the highest levels.

The timetable works on the premise that the existence of every train and stop must be justified based on organisational goals of providing transportation with optimum and efficient utilisation of the available resources. Details of the timetable are not available, but some of the broad principles are as follows, sources said:

* Trains with less than 50 per cent occupancy on average in a year will not find any place in the network. If needed such trains will be merged with other, more popular trains.

* Long-distance trains will ideally not have stops within 200 km of each other, unless there is a major city on the way. A total 10,000 stops have been listed to be scratched — however, officials clarified that the removal will only be in respect of certain trains, and there will always be some or the other train that will serve these stations.

* All passenger trains will run on a “hub-and-spoke model”. The “hubs” will be cities with a population of a million or more, where all long-distance trains will terminate. Smaller places will be linked to the hubs through connecting trains, as per the timetable. “Major tourist destinations and pilgrimage centres will be classified as hubs,” a senior Railway official told The Indian Express.

* Suburban networks such as the Mumbai locals, will not be affected by the new timetable, the official said.

* The timetable will rationalise the use of the rolling stock available with the Railways. Trains will have either 22 Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches or 24 Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches. The LHB coaches are manufactured mainly at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala; the ICF coaches, which currently make up the bulk of the rolling stock but which will be ultimately phased out, are built in Perambur, Chennai. The timetable also envisages use of 18-coach overnight trains. The order for this standardisation has been issued.

The exercise is currently in its final stage, and IIT-Bombay experts are running simulations of the model along with operations professionals of the Railways. The final simulations are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, sources said.

The timetable could be rolled out early next year, depending on the Covid-19 situation, officials said. The Railways had confirmed at the end of July that the timetable was in the works, but had given no details.

“Train operations will be divided into exclusive corridors for passenger trains, freight trains and maintenance during the day. We would have implemented the timetable by now, but because of the Covid-19 situation we could not do it. It will happen when we are able to resume normal train services,” Chairman Railway Board V K Yadav had said in July.

Aug 31 (14:09)   Pune-Nashik semi-high speed rail: Soon travel by train between Pune & Nashik in less than 2 hours!

The Maharashtra govt has begun acquiring land for the 233-km rail project which would bring down travel time between the two cities from the present 6-7 hours to under two hours.
Looking to revive its economy which has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, the Maharashtra government has put on the fast track its large infrastructure projects. One of these is the delayed Pune-Nashik semi-high speed rail link, which would bring down travel time between two of the state’s most important cities from the present six-seven hours to under two hours, boosting passenger and freight movement and facilitating the creation of a Mumbai-Pune-Nashik golden triangle and economic hub.
Billed

as the first low-cost semi-high speed corridor in the country, the 233-km-long line would cost Rs 16,039 crore and see trains running at a speed of 200kmph, with its design allowing for an upgrade to 250kmph in the future. It would be constructed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), a 50:50 joint venture between the government of Maharashtra and the Ministry of Railways. The state and the Centre would provide Rs 3,208 crore each for the project and the rest would come from funding agencies in India and overseas.
It was to answer the long-pending demand for a rail link between Pune and Nashik that the state government approved the project in 2017. But it was only after the Indian Railways green-lighted the project in June 2020 that preparations got off the ground. Jolted by the damaging effects of the pandemic, the government has put land acquisition work on the fast track, says Pune’s Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao, highlighting Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s recent remarks about work being expedited for the ‘high priority’ project.
In all, 1,470 hectares of land would be required in Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts, Rao says—the rail line would pass through 112.10 km in Pune, 58 km in Ahmednagar and 63.75 km in Nashik. Around 575 hectares has to be acquired in Pune’s Haveli, Junnar and Ambegaion tehsils. “We will need around Rs 1,300-1,500 crore for acquiring this land,” he says, with the money to be made available by the Indian Railways.
MRIDC officials are confident of completing the project in 1,200 days once construction work starts. To save time, MRIDC would carry out in-house design and drawing work, doing away with consultants. It would also be the first such rail project to see both the lines being constructed simultaneously.
The broad-gauge line would start at the Pune Railway Station and terminate at the existing Nashik Railway Station, with 24 stations in all. There would be multimodal hubs at major railway stations along the route, ensuring connectivity to bus terminuses, metro stations and freight terminals.
MRIDC plans to procure six train sets with six coaches each, allowing a passenger load of 450 per journey. Revenue from the line is estimated at Rs 1,643 crore in FY25 and Rs 2,394 crore in FY30. The rail link between Pune and Nashik is expected to decongest NH 60 which sees movement of 51,000 tonnes of freight every day, passing through around a dozen industrial and agro processing zones. Passenger movement between Pune and Nashik is estimated to reach 87,629 a day in 2024, of which around 27,515 are expected to shift to rail in FY24, with the number going up to 36,678 by FY30.

The Railways spend about Rs 40-50 to wash each linen set and there are around 18 lakh linen sets in circulation at present.

The Railways is reportedly forming a committee to discuss the mechanised mega laundries set up to wash the linen used in trains under the Build-Operate-Own-Transfer model across the country.

view of the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic, the air conditioned coaches of Indian Railways may cease providing blankets, pillows, hand towels and sheets to travellers once it resumes full services after lockdown. According to officials, setting modern temperature control in the coaches can eliminate the need for blankets.

While an official statement has not yet been issued by the Railway Ministry, the issue was discussed in a top-level meeting between the Railway Board and its zonal offices this week, reported The Indian Express. The meeting took place over video-conference between top officials of the Railway Board and officials from the divisional and zonal departments.
