Oct 27 (13:21)   IIT Graduate Got Arrested For Developing A Faster Rail Ticket Booking App Than IRCTC

Deepesh_Choudhary^~   12 news posts
Entry# 4759917   News Entry# 422850         Tags   Past Edits
If you've ever tried booking rail tickets from IRCTC's official website, then you probably already know that it's a Herculean task. Yes, they say the website has improved over the year, but there's just no denying that it feels like it was created for the people living in the past.

Thankfully, we have other alternatives out there for booking rail tickets. But more recently, it looks like an IITian, who graduated from IIT Kharagpur, built a rail ticket booking system that was faster than IRCTC. This is the kind of thing you

want to see from the bright minds of IIT pass outs, but IRCTC's chain of thoughts was a little different.

They decided to sue him for that and the app has now landed the IITian in jail. We're talking about S Yuvarajaa, a Tirupur native. He's now in jail for creating what we think is a faster and more efficient solution to book tickets than IRCTC.

His app was called "Super Tatkal" and IRCTC says he bypassed their ticket booking system. IRCTC's argument is that Yuvaraaja wasn't an authorized agent and his solution deprived the chances of getting a ticket for people who use IRCTC.

He was charged under section 143 (2) of the Railway Act for bypassing the railway system and making money illegally. After this incident, a Twitter user who claims to be Yuvaraaja's friend made it a point to note that all the payments were directly made to IRCTC. He said that he was falsely accused.

We're now waiting to see how this whole event unfolds and will have more to talk about this as soon as we get more info.

Unless there were any security vulnerabilities , speed alone cannot be a valid reason for arrest. Many security features might have been compromised, due to which booking might have been faster. These details should be made public.

Sep 09 (09:23)   Railways works on upgrading Sleeper and General Class coaches to AC

satyajeet~   1 news posts
Entry# 4710287   News Entry# 417895         Tags   Past Edits
In a move to upgrade train travel for the common man, the Indian Railways is redesigning the 3-tier non-AC Sleeper Class and unreserved General Class coaches as AC (air-conditioned) coaches. This will allow the Railways to roll out all-AC trains, without taking away the option of low-cost travel for the public, said officials. Officials said the upgraded Sleeper Class coach will be an “economical” AC 3-tier Class, in between what is now the AC 3-tier Class and non-AC Sleeper Class.

Sources said the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala has been entrusted with

the job of making the prototype of the upgraded Sleeper Class coach, which will have 83 berths instead of the current 72. Internally, the upgraded coach is being termed as “AC 3-tier Tourist Class”, an official said.

“It is like an affordable AC 3-tier Class,” said a senior official, adding that the idea is to make AC trains affordable for all.

In the first phase, about 230 such coaches are being manufactured. Each coach is estimated to cost about Rs 2.8-3 crore, which is about 10 per cent more than the manufacturing cost of the current AC 3-tier Class coach. However, with more berths and expected demand, the new ‘economical’ AC 3-tier Class is estimated to bring in more earnings.

The unreserved General Class coaches are also set to get an upgrade as a 100-seater AC Class. While the design for this is being finalised, officials working on the project told The Indian Express that the initial design had provision for 105 seats per coach.

The last time the government tried to roll out an economical AC 3-tier Class was during the UPA-I government (2004-09), when Lalu Prasad was the Railways Minister. Introduced in the Garib Rath Express trains as ‘AC Economy Class’, a side-middle berth was added to increase capacity and profitability. However, passengers complained of discomfort and overcrowding, and these coaches were eventually discontinued.

In the new ‘economical AC 3-tier Class’, more space has been created by shifting the electrical units, and by doing away with the compartments for storing linen sets. As reported by The Indian Express earlier, the Railways has decided to stop distribution of blankets and linen sets in AC coaches, even post-Covid.

Sources said the idea behind the upgrade is to gradually move towards an all-AC model, although a formal decision on this is yet to be taken. Meanwhile, the existing stock of non-AC coaches will continue to operate, officials said. “Whether these will be phased out eventually is a call yet to be taken,” said an official.

Both the upgraded coaches will be built on the Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) platform for better speed and safety. Over the last few years, the Indian Railways has been moving to an all-LHB stock, phasing out the older ICF variety whose technology is about five decades old.

Kochi: Kerala is likely to get three more trains soon. The Railway board recently approved Ernakulam-Tatanagar Junction (Jamshedpur), Ernakulam-Velankanni Biweekly (via Kollam and Chenkotta) and Mangaluru-Coimbatore Shatabdi trains.
However, even if the trains get charted in the revised timetable - set to be implemented in July this year - the commencement of the services may get delayed due to the COVID-19 situation in the country.
Railways' coach factories have been facing severe manpower shortage due to the pandemic. It will be difficult for the Railways to finish the production of new coaches in

this situation.
The board has also decided to extend Thiruvananthapuram-Madurai Express to Rameswaram and Guruvayoor-Punalur passenger train to Madurai as an express train.
However, Kerala's demand for Ernakulam-Rameswaram and Kollam-Tirupati trains were rejected.
Decision on the extension of Pune-Ernakulam Express and Tambaram-Nagercoil Antyodaya Express to Kollam Junction will be taken after the completion of track doubling in Kottayam.

Railways should focus on speeding up the routes in Kerala and providing faster schedules to trains and unnecessary halts should be deleted. There is no demand for the Mangalore Coimbatore Shatabdi. Will definitely be a flop.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's full cabinet meeting involving security panel and economic affairs committee is expected to take some historic decisions. If the buzz doing the rounds in political circles is anything to go by, one of the major decisions is likely to be replacement of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman who has come in for heavy criticism over her failed economic policies.

Nirmala's budget too has faced a lot of flak from citizens. Sources say that Modi is considering the option of changing the finance minister.

Subramanian Swamy is too powerful and he would be the best choice for Finance minister no doubt. But He is an influencer and a very straight forward man. Modi Government ka Hissa he but Modi government ka bhi kabhi kabhi khula criticism kar leta hai wohi Government ka. Modi government will try to curb him to a certain extent. But if he revolts against his party, then the BJP will get in big trouble. Modi is not interfering in these matters as of now. He is holding talks only on International matters and disputes. The entire show is being handled by Amit Shah and Co. As for Nirmala Mam, she should be the education minister or even Railway minister would be good I think .

Yes. Well some people have strong accents and some people don't. This pertains to every language in the world. Even in North, worlds like Eschool, Escale etc are quite heard. In Telugu, people say saar instead of sir. In Tamil, it is Aartel instead of Airtel. I shouldn't really suggest to dial down the accent but once in a while it would really help. And on the other hand, we have people like Shashi Tharoor. That much is also not expected, just to be clear.

May 26 (14:13)   Shramik special train leaves Gujarat for Bihar but reaches Karnataka

Piyush Goyal = congestion/confusion
Believe it or not, but it’s a fact that a Shramik Special train, carrying migrants, left Gujarat for Bihar but reached Karnataka. Yet another Shramik Special, carrying over 1,200 migrants from Surat, was supposed to reach Chapra in Bihar, but instead, it reached Rourkela in Odisha. Two other similar trains, instead of reaching Patna, reached Purulia (in West Bengal) and Gaya, respectively.

State this month, the fact is that the functioning of railways has gone ‘off track’ and the system completely ‘derailed’.
Or else, how could one explain that a train, which was supposed to leave Surat on May 16 and reach Chapra (in North Bihar) on May 18, went to Bengaluru. After the train was traced, it was brought to Chapra on May 25, a tiring nine-day ordeal and untold hardship for the passengers in this hot humid summer.
The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the East Central Railway (ECR), Rajesh Kumar, however, denied any knowledge of such ‘lapse’. However, sources in the Railways (posted in Uttar Pradesh) did confirm to DH on Tuesday that a Bihar-bound train (No. 0912791), coming from Surat in Gujarat, did lose its track at Bhusaval (in Maharashtra) and instead of going northwards towards Allahabad (now Prayagraj) en route Chapra, it went down South towards Bengaluru.
“Similar error was made in the case of another train, Surat-Siwan Shramik Special, when it was diverted to Rourkela in Odisha,” said a senior official, strictly on the condition of anonymity. “Both the trains were traced and brought to Chapra and Siwan on May 25,” said the Railway official, admitting it was a major faux pas.
“The Shramik Specials are being run on the request of the state governments. So it’s not entirely the fault of railways,” he argued. But he had no answer when asked whether it’s the responsibility of a state government to decide about the track and route of a particular train.
“In Shramik Specials, only two things matter. Originating station and the destination. Once you reach the destination, the chapter ends… no matter which route you travelled, because many a time we have to divert routes due to congestion on main routes,” he made an unsuccessful bid to cover up.

This is so wrong. Government is not trying to take ownership of anything. Only Shaheen Bagh, Hindu Musalmaan. Blame everything on Congress. Try to take ownership of mistakes instead of diverting public.

We'll see. Hope Piyush Goyal starts working properly instead of tweeting at 2:11 AM. Lockdown is going to be lifted in few days and even when trains are not running in full capacity, they are not able to run trains. No use of all these things when they make poor migrants sit in trains for days without food.
