Feb 10 (08:13)   Chinks in coastal railway unity seen

Anupam Enosh Sarkar^~   25033 news posts
Entry# 4872339   News Entry# 438149         Tags   Past Edits
A suggestion by Dakshina Kannada MP and State BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel, purportedly at the behest of a few, to detain the Karwar-Bengaluru overnight express for a few minutes to facilitate the smooth running of the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Central overnight express appears to have ruffled coastal unity on railway issues.

Mr. Kateel in his January 30 letter to South Western Railway’s General Manager A.K. Singh welcomed SWR’s proposal to run Train Nos. 16511/12 Bengaluru-Mangaluru-Kannur overnight express via Kunigal on all seven days instead of four days. However, the train takes over 10.30

hours in both the directions as it gets detained at Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Ghat to facilitate unhindered crossing of Karwar services.

The MP suggested that SWR detain Karwar-Bengaluru Express at the Ghat to allow the crossing of Bengaluru-Mangaluru Express while detaining Mangaluru-Bengaluru Express at the Ghat for crossing of the Bengaluru-Karwar Express. The letter was written ostensibly at the behest of some officebearers of the Pashchima Karavali Rail Yatri Abhivriddhi Samiti, that has been fighting for coastal Karnataka Railway causes for long.

Signal upgrade

Activist Kundapura Gautam Shetty said both Karwar and Mangaluru trains operated smoothly in March last before getting cancelled during the lockdown. Problems arose after signal upgradation in the Ghat section, which actually should have augmented train operations. SWR and Southern Railway could address the issue if demanded aggressively.

On Saturday, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje wrote to SWR demanding speeding up of Karwar-Bengaluru express by curtailing its slack running time between Sakleshpur and Bengaluru. Thanking SWR for introducing the speedy service skirting Mangaluru, she said Karwar-Bengaluru Express could reach the capital by around 7 a.m. instead of the present 8 a.m. The train’s timetable and its route via Padil were the reasons for its success.

Uttara Kannada Railway Seva Samiti Secretary Rajeev Gaonkar said activists in Udupi and Uttara Kannada were ready to sit with those in Mangaluru to find a solution for the delay of Mangaluru train. However, a few Mangaluru activists used every channel to prove Karwar train ‘illegal,’ to get it extended to Goa, to alter its timetable and get Mr. Kateel’s letter written.

“Rail users can agitate for speedy service; but we cannot dictate terms on train operation, like train detention, which is the exclusive domain of the Railways,” Mr. Gaonkar said.

West Coast Samiti president G. Hanumanth Kamath was in agreement with this view; but could neither justify nor disagree with the acts of fellow activists.

KOCHI: Kerala will get its first 12-coach advanced Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (Memu) train next month. The three-phase
train will run between Ernakulam and Kollam.
The coaches will have facilities like passenger information system , GPS, CCTV cameras , public address system and
LED lights.
The

state will also get one more three-phase Memu train ,
which is likely to run between Kollam and Kanyakumari.
The train will have three motor cars and nine trailer cars. Currently, a Memu train with similar features is operating services from
Ernakulam but it has only eight coaches. “The new train can accommodate more passengers compared to existing ones.
Around four Memu trains operate to neighbouring districts from Ernakulam. Three-phase Memu trains have more accelerating
speed. Normal passenger trains take around 10 minutes to brake at a station and gain speed to resume journey. But a three phase Memu train needs only three minutes for the same,” said a railway official.
The new train has designed seats, air bellows for secondary
suspension for comfort riding, carrying capacity of 2,402
passengers (sitting 614 and standing 1,788) and bio-toilets. The cabins of motormen and guard are air-conditioned.
The train is indigenously manufactured by Integral Coach Factory and has energy efficient electric traction propulsion system
supported by regenerative braking that can save up to 35% energy compared to conventional Memu trains

Apr 28 2019 (10:44)   Rake-sharing sought for timely departure of Mumbai train

Vishwanath_BAY^~   3183 news posts
Entry# 4303613   News Entry# 381242         Tags   Past Edits
Passengers travelling between the Karnataka coast and Mumbai by the Mumbai CSMT-Mangaluru Junction-Mumbai CSMT Superfast Express (Train 12133/12134) have urged the Railways to make a rake-sharing arrangement for the train with the Mangaluru Central-MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Superfast Express (12685/12686).
This, according to many passengers, will ensure that the Mangaluru Junction-Mumbai CSMT Express starts at the right time — 1.55 p.m. — and reaches Mumbai at the scheduled time — 4.25 a.m. — the next day. The Mumbai CSMT-Mangaluru Junction Express, which should arrive at Mangaluru Junction at 1.10 p.m., generally arrives with an average delay of 45 minutes, thereby delaying its return journey.
Voicing

public concern over the issue, National Railway Users’ Consultative Council member Kunjal Venkatesh Kini has written to the Divisional Manager of Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division, urging him to introduce an arrangement of sharing rakes between the two services. Because of the delayed departure of CSMT Express, the travelling public is affected a lot as the train reaches Mumbai late, he noted.
Mr. Kini also noted such an arrangement between the Mumbai LTT-Mangaluru Central-Mumbai LTT Matsyagandha Express (12619/12620) and the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Mangaluru Central-Thiruvana- nthapuram Central (16347/16348) wasworking excellently, with no delay in operations on both sides.
Extension to Central
For such an arrangement between the Mumbai and Chennai trains, the CSMT Express has to be extended to Mangaluru Central, Mr. Kini noted, adding that there was availability of platforms at Central for receiving and despatching the train.
Mr. Kini also said that the Chennai-Mangaluru Central Express arrives at Central at 9.05 a.m. and the rake remains idle till 4.15 p.m., which is the train’s departure time. The CSMT-Mangaluru Express could be made to arrive at Central at 2.25 p.m., considering the regular delayed arrival of 45 minutes. The rake then may be used to operate the Mangaluru Central-MGR Chennai Central Express (12686) at 4.15 p.m.
Meanwhile, the rake of the MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Express (12685) that arrives at Central at 9.05 a.m. may be used to operate the Mangaluru Central-Mumbai CSMT Express, leaving Central at 1.30 p.m. and Junction at 1.55 p.m., Mr. Kini suggested.
During the monsoon timetable, when trains are operated at lower speeds on the Konkan Railway network, the CSMT Express may be despatched from Central at 2.40 p.m., instead of the scheduled 4.45 p.m., to reach Mumbai at 8.30 a.m. with the Chennai Express rake, Mr. Kini suggested.
