The Karnataka portion of Southern Railway in Mangaluru got covered in this year’s budget as Mangaluru Junction – Panambur doubling got Rs 40 crore and is targeted for completion by May 2021, said John Thomas, general manager, Southern Railway.
He, along with Principal Heads of Departments, held a virtual press meet in connection with allocation for Southern Railway in Finance Budget 2021-22.
Besides this, the GM said, under Vision 2024 an additional Platform Line and provision of new 24 coach pit line in lieu of existing 18 coach pit line at Mangaluru Central
under traffic facility works are in progress and is targeted for completion by March 2022.
He gave a presentation on the budget allocations for Southern Railway, starting with the six pillars of Budget 2021-22. He stated the main highlight of this year’s budget is that Indian Railways has been allocated an amount of Rs 1,07,300 crore under Gross budgetary support (GBS). Of which Southern Railway has been allocated a substantial amount of Rs 3,855 crore, including Stores and Manufacture Suspense.
He said that allocation under capital/GBS is very key as the land acquisition for doubling and new lines have to be done under capital. This will give a fillip to the infrastructure in Southern Railway, he added.
Thomas also highlighted that Southern Railway will complete electrification of all the broad gauge routes in its jurisdiction by December 2023.He pointed out that an allocation of Rs 146 crore will give a big push for Signal & Telecom Infrastructure. Major works involve setting up of Modern centralised Train Control System in Chennai- Gudur and Chenni – Renigunta route, Train Collision and Avoidance System (TCAS), LTE and Train Management System. He also stated that vistadome coaches will be introduced in the scenic sections which are to be identified.

Union Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi has stated that doubling of the railway line between Castle Rock and Vasco is expected to be a reality soon, as the land acquisition issue is expected to be resolved soon with the intervention of Goa government.
He was speaking to media persons on Monday regarding the sanction of a new direct railway line between Dharwad and Belagavi, a project which has been the long-standing demand of people of North Karnataka.
“The double-tracking between Londa and Miraj is on the verge of completion while double-tracking
between Londa and Tinaighat would be completed in the next couple of months. After the double-tracking completes, it would enhance the faster connectivity and better train services,” said Angadi.
“Work in Goa is also expected to complete as I understand the Goa government has taken up the land acquisition matter.”
Giving details about the newly sanctioned railway line, the union minister said at present, rail connectivity between Belagavi and Dharwad goes via Londa junction, which is a circuitous route.
“With this new line, the distance between the three important cities of Hubballi, Dharwad and Belagavi will reduce, resulting in significant development, while running time of trains between Hubballi and Belagavi will also reduce,” he said.
“The Karnataka government will give free land for the project while Rs 927.40 crore cost of the project would be shared on a 50-50 sharing basis by the State government and Indian Railways,” the union minister added.

The Vallarpadam Rail Bridge in Kerala is located on the famous Vembanad Lake, and is known for its scenic backwaters and tourist hotspot, Kumarakom.

Indian Railways’ Vallarpadam Rail Bridge: Did you know that India’s second longest Rail bridge- Vallarpadam Rail Bridge is known for its scenic beauty? The Vallarpadam Rail Bridge of Indian Railways, located in the state of Kerala is 4.62 kilometres long. It is next only to rail-cum-road Bogibeel Bridge. The Vallarpadam Rail Bridge in Kerala is located on the famous Vembanad Lake, and is known for its scenic backwaters
and tourist hotspot, Kumarakom. While the longest, 4.94 kilometres long Bogibeel Bridge has been built over the river Brahmaputra in the Northeastern part of the country. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2018.

The Bogibeel Bridge is a combined rail and road bridge, which spans over the river Brahmaputra and is located 17 km downstream of Dhemaji district and Dibrugarh district. It links Dibrugarh in Assam to Pasighat in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. It links the Indian Railways network on the South bank and North bank between Dhamalgaon railway station and Tangani railway station.

Before this bridge was launched, a train journey from the state of Arunachal Pradesh to Dibrugarh meant a detour of 500 km via Guwahati. Now, with Bogibeel Bridge, the train journey will cover less than 100 km. In addition to this, the travel time from the national capital to Dibrugarh has also reduced drastically.

Meanwhile, the Chenab bridge, which will connect Kashmir to the rest of India, is expected to be completed by December 2021. The upcoming Chenab bridge is going to be the world’s highest railway bridge. Indian Railways’ Chenab bridge will be 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In the 111 km long stretch between Katra and Banihal, the Chenab bridge forms a crucial link. It is a part of the Indian Railways’ Udhampur- Srinagar-Baramulla rail link (USBRL) project. Over the construction work on the Chenab bridge is over, it will break the record of China’s Beipan river Shuibai rail bridge.

WR Saves More Than Rs. 32.22 Cr By Converting EOG LHBrakes Into Head on Generation (HOG) System In 2019-2020 & Rs. 83 Cr in the last 4 years
Photo caption: The newly converted 3-Phase state-of-the-art WAP7 locomotive.
Western Railway is continuously working towards contributing extensively to ‘Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat’
Mission through new and ingenious ways. With an increased emphasis onreduction in operation cost of train, ultimately providing a greener& cleaner environment, the Electrical Department of Western Railway has commissioned 67 locomotives converted to Head on Generation (HOG) System till now, which the highest on Indian Railways.
Text Box: In 2019-20, WR modified 34 rakes making it numero uno to run the highest no. of HOG converted trains on Indian Railways. According to a press release issued by Shri Ravinder Bhakar – Chief Public Relations Officer of WR, Western Railway has commissioned 673-Phase state-of-the-art WAP7 locomotives in which 25 kV Over Head Power Supply is converted to 750V by 500 KVA converters installed in the locomotives and transmitted through electrical couplers between coaches to meet electrical load of train. It is worth mentioning that in the current financial year, Western Railway has modified electrical circuits in 34rakes which is the highest on Indian Railways by a zonal railway. As on 20thJanuary, 2020 out of the 65 HOG compliant LHB rakes primarily owned by Western Railway, 51 LHB rakes are running in services of 49 regular train pairs trains on HOG system. Efforts are being made to facilitate further proliferation of HOG system and savings in cost of train operation by expediting work of electrification on Western Railway.

Text Box: WR has recorded net savings of Rs. 83 crores in the last 4 years in electrical operations. Shri Bhakar added that the HOG conversion work on Indian Railway was first started in Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway in November 2015, when the first rake of Train no. 12951/52 Mumbai – New Delhi Rajdhani Express was converted and taken over on HOG system. Since then, the HOG rake holding & locomotives has increased progressively. As a result, Western Railway has recorded net savings of Rs. 32.22 cr during current financial year 2019-20 (upto 20thJanuary, 2020) and a total net saving during 2019-20 is expected to be Rs. 45cr (approximately). It is applaudable that due to the switching over to HOG system, Western Railway has been able to achieve net savings of Rs. 83.06cr since December 2015 to 20th January 2020. The savings is on account of lower cost of electric energy drawn from overhead lines vis-a-vis cost of energy generated by operating the DG sets installed in power cars. In addition to the savings, there has been drastic reduction in the consumption of High Speed Diesel (HSD) oil i.e. 16,696.843 KL which has led to reduction in CO2 emissions by 44,080 MT & thus helped in making the environment cleaner and pollution free. It is truly commendable that with various green initiatives and ideas under its belt, Western Railway continues to be on the path of guarding the environment by its commitment towards creating a cleaner and healthier environment through its green initiatives.
