In its endeavour for electrification of the 137-kilometre Banihal-Baramulla rail link in next two years, the Northern Railways has started erecting electric poles along the track from Budgam to Baramulla.

“Depending on the weather, erecting the poles between Budgam to Baramulla might take next one month,” Saqib Yousuf, Chief Area Manager said.
Another railway official said the overhead electrification, for which some work was started in June 2019, has a stipulated completion period of two years till June 2021. It may be recalled that tenders for the project were released two years ago but full-fledged work has started only now.
“The total route length for electrification is 137.73 kilometres with three main substations of Qazigund, Budgam and Baramulla from where power will be supplied to the overhead equipment of the rail line,” the official said. He said there would be 10 power switching stations in Banihal-Baramulla section.

“The overhead equipment of the rail line will be supplied with 25 KV power supply. Besides, the transmission substation will be fed by a 132 KV supply from different power grids,” the official said.
The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA) “to monitor the traction power distribution” will be based at Budgam station, he said.
As per officials, the Railways has approached J&K administration and central government for power supply for electrification of the rail link.
“Electrification will be more economical and is 40 per cent lower than when compared to running the railways on diesel,” said the official.
He said the electric poles would be erected after every 400-420 meters and it would be more eco-friendly compared to running railways on fuel.
As per officials, in the first phase, a total number of 1271 electric poles would be erected between Budgam and Baramulla stations. Of these, the highest number of 305 poles will be erected between Sopore and Baramulla. Besides, poles will be erected between Budgam to Mazhom, Mazhom to Pattan, Pattan to Hamre and Hamre to Sopore, officials said.
It may be recalled that Kashmir got its first train service in 2013 when it was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

South Western Railway is set to raise maximum permissible speeds on the 186 km Londa-Miraj section to 110 kmph. Speed on the 19 km Sanvordem-Vasco section is also likely to be raised soon.
This move is likely to result in a slight reduction of time taken by trains to cover these sections. It is not clear if the savings will be passed on to passenger timetables.
The Commissioner for Railway Safety has permitted raising of speeds on both sections, part of Hubballi division.

The railway station at Hubballi will soon have the longest railway platform in the world. 
At present, the length of the platform is 550 metres, and it was earlier decided to increase it to 1,400 metres. The South-Western Railway (SWR) later decided to increase the length to 1,505 metres.
At present, the 1,366 metre-long platform at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, which is the headquarters of the North-Eastern Railway (NER), is the longest railway platform in the world. The platform was renovated in 2013.

Heralding a landmark moment for South Central Railway in enhancing rail connectivity between Hyderabad City and major cities such as Mahabubnagar, Kurnool, Bengaluru, Anantapur, Kadapa, Tirupati etc., towards south, the Doubling of Railway Line between Shadnagar and Gollapalli has been completed and commissioned today i.e., 16th September, 2020. – Umdanagar is undertaken as part of MMTS Phase I &II, the doubling & electrification works in balance section i.e., Umdanagar – Mahabubnagar have been undertaken as separate project and is progressing at a fast pace.
Now, completion of the 29 kms stretch of the newly Doubled rail line between Shadnagar – Gollapalli is a major milestone in accomplishing the Doubling project between Secunderabad - Mahabubnagar.
The Salient features of Shadnagar – Gollapalli Doubling Project are –
Ø Shadnagar, Gollapalli and Balanagar Station yards have been remodelled to incorporate additional running lines.
Ø Modern station building with well drawn-out elevation have been provided with improved Passenger Amenities like well-planned circulating area, booking concourse, convenient platforms, Foot over Bridges and Drinking water facilities among others.
Ø The track is designed to handle 25 Tonne axle loads with speed potential of 130 Kms per hour
Ø 3 Major Bridges with PSC Girders & 52 Minor Bridges with RCC Boxes have been constructed.
Ø 4 Manned LC gates have been eliminated by constructing RUBs, while another 6 LC gates were upgraded to electronic operation for enhanced safety.
Ø Energy Conservation measures have been given prime importance by installation of 100% LED lighting, using of 5-star rated electrical equipments, solar panels over LC Gates etc.
Ø Station Masters rooms have been given a complete makeover by incorporating modern aesthetic designing to provide a positive work ambience, duly taking care every minute details of train operations to ensure highest safety standards.
Ø All the 33KV & 11KV overhead Power lines have been modified to underground to do away failures because of snapping of conductors.
Ø State of the art Signaling & Telecommunication features have been provided in the entire section, which includes:
o Electronic Interlocking with Centralised Architecture have been installed in three stations viz., Shadnagar, Gollapalli and Balanagar to ensure the safety at the highest level.
o “A” Class Lightning protection o­n Towers are fixed to protect the Electronic Equipment from lightning strikes, thereby enhancing system reliability.
o Dedicated 24 Fibre OFCs(Optic Fibre Cables) and 6 Qüad cables are laid throughout section for effective and reliable communication & signaling.
o Signal Maintainer’s Rooms have been designed to ensure easy access of technical information in case of any failures, to minimize shut down time and improve work ambiance.
o For the first time ever o­n SCR, video surveillance has also been included for relay room, station yards and interlocked level crossing gates in the section to keep tab o­n safety and security of prime railway areas.
Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR has congratulated the officers and staff of Hyderabad Division and RVNL o­n successful completion of doubling of the important section between Shadnagar – Gollapalli. He also stated that the dedication and determination presented by the Officers & staff towards the completion of project during the pandemic times, duly maintaining the Covid Protocol is highly appreciable. o­n this Occasion, he advised the RVNL authorities and Hyderabad Division to maintain same vigor & attention in completing the balance portion to achieve the target within the shortest time possible.

They have not mentioned regarding CRS inspection. If CRS inspection is not done then passenger trains will not be allowed to run on second line. So I asked whether you have any further information

Giving conservation programmes a shot in the arm, the Karnataka State Wildlife Board on Monday “dropped” the controversial Hubballi-Ankola Railway project which had already been rejected thrice by the state government.
Refusing to yield to intense lobbying favouring the project, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-headed board decided to drop the project for the time being.

the Railways to come through the state government. The issue was tabled yet again before the Board and rejected by the chief minister.
Sources in the Wildlife Board revealed to DH that a few of the IAS officers present during the meeting tried to convince the chief minister to give approval for the project as it would support the development. However, the majority members, including Forest Minister Anand Singh and MLA Sowmya Reddy, appealed that it should not be given clearance considering what the state has witnessed in Kodagu. Convinced by the argument, Yediyurappa reportedly directed the officials to ‘drop’ the project for now.
It was surprising that the officials tried to convince the chief minister by referring to a report by the IISc submitted by noted ecologist Dr T V Ramachandra, favouring the project by adopting a few mitigation measures. A senior Karnataka Forest Department official confirmed that the project has been ‘dropped’. 
The project spanning 168 km linking Hosapete with ports at Belikeri and Tadadi near Karwar in Uttara Kannada district had sought diversion of 596 hectares of forest in the Western Ghats which has Kali Tiger Reserve and other protected areas. The rail line work required the felling of close to 2 lakh trees.
Giridhar Kulkarni, a wildlife activist who had petitioned to the State Wildlife Board to drop the project said, “It is reliably learnt that majority of the board members opposed the proposal. I hope their objections would be recorded and a suitable decision should be taken in the interest of wildlife.”
