Indian Railways has permitted the public to travel by suburban train services in Chennai during non-peak hours from December 23, the Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday. "From 23rd December, Indian Railways permits general public to travel by suburban train services in Chennai during non-peak hours. With adequate safety measures in place, this will greatly enhance ease of movement and passenger convenience," Goyal wrote on Twitter. According to a press statement, it was issued that with effect from 23-12-2020, Southern Railway will permit the public to travel during non-peak hours in the Chennai suburban train system. "The non-peak hours for this purpose are reckoned from the early hours of the day to 07:00 hours in the morning, 09:30 hrs to 16:30 hrs and from 19:00 hrs to the closing hours of the day. During these timings, general public would be allowed to travel duly following all the COVID-19 guidelines issued by the...
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare," the release stated. The press statement read, "The intermittent timings will be considered as peak hours, i.e 07:00 hrs to 09:30, 16:30 hrs to 19:00 hrs. During these peak hours, as it was prevalent earlier, only the employees engaged in the organisation rendering essential services shall be allowed to travel. It is reiterated that the General public will not be allowed during these peak hours." In the Phase-I, employees engaged in the organisations rendering essential services were permitted to travel. Lady passengers were allowed to travel during the non-peak hours in the Phase-II. Now as part of Phase-III, the general public has been allowed to travel during the non-peak hours as specified above. Southern Railway has been increasing the number of train services in view of these phased relaxations. At present, a number of train services run are 410 which is about 65 percent of normal train operations in the Chennai Suburban Sector.

Thiruvananthapuram:  Many passenger trains would be converted into Express trains, the Railway Ministry said. Passenger trains that run beyond 200 km per day will be converted into Express and in Kerala more than 10 trains will become Express. These trains will be speeded up and their halts curtailed. More than 500 trains across the country would be converted into Express trains, the Ministry said.
However, it is not clear if the decision by the Railways is a temporary one during the Covid pandemic times or a move to reduce the number of passenger trains and stop it. The zonal railway offices have been directed to take a decision on this within 2 days.
passenger trains are converted to Expresses, the fares too will be increased. Many stations will be excluded. For Railways, passenger trains do not make profit. Small stations incur a huge expenditure for functioning. There are no reservation coaches on local trains but there will be reservation coaches on Express trains.

Sep 18 2017 (22:43)   Mumbai-Delhi route may soon get new, faster Rajdhani Express train

Sahil~   32 news posts

NEW DELHI: The railways is planning to introduce a brand new and faster Rajdhani Express on the Mumbai-Delhi line, the third Rajdhani train on the route, in the next few months, senior officials said today.
The new train, likely to be launched by the Diwali this year, will cover the distance between Bandra (in Mumbai) to Nizamuddin station (in Delhi) in 13 hours, officials said.
Presently, the route is served by two Rajdhani Express trains-- the August Kranti Rajdhani and the Mumbai Central-New Delhi Rajdhani. Both of them take more than
15 hours to cover the distance between the national capital and the financial capital of the country.
While the August Kranti Rajdhani takes around 17 hours 05 minutes to travel a distance of 1,377 km at an average speed of 80 kmph, the Mumbai Central-New Delhi (or just Mumbai Rajdhani, as it is often called) train takes around 15 hours 35 minutes, at an average speed of 89 kmph, to travel 1386 km.
Neither of the two halts at Bandra.
"The trial run (for the new train) will start in a couple of days. We are using the existing 24-coach Mumbai Rajdhani with two engines to see if we can make the journey shorter by a few hours. We are using Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches," said a senior official.
Alternatively, sources indicate, the railways could introduce the new Rajdhani with 14 coaches and one engine to ramp up the speed, and then determine which of the two is the better option.
LHB coaches are of a superior design that reduces the chance of derailment and mitigates the possibility of grievous injury or death in case of accidents. These coaches have anti-climbing features and provision of superior braking.
The Mumbai Rajdhani as of now has a sanctioned speed of 130 kmph. However, because of the numerous curves and speed restrictions on the route, its average speed comes down to about 89 kmph.
The railways is hoping to increase it to 90-95 kmph, sources said.
They said that LHB coaches, which are designed to run at a top speed of over 150 kmph, will be able to make the 13-hour cut-off if the current six halts of the Mumbai Rajdhani were to be brought down to three or two.
While the effort is on to increase the average speed, the maximum speed of the new Rajdhani is likely to be maintained at 130 kmph.
The Delhi-Mumbai line is important for the railways as the route, once championed mostly by business travellers, has been losing passengers to airlines.
This route is also one of the two to be developed in to special corridors with semi-high-speed services.
