Nov 23 2020 (16:45)   Work on Bengaluru's Baiyappanahalli road bridge restarts after seven years

Massive relief is in store for vehicle users heading from Banaswadi, Kalyan Nagar, Hennur and Kasturi Nagar towards Old Madras Road.
Work on the Road Over Bridge (ROB) that was hanging fire for the last seven years began last month and is likely to be completed early next year. This will ensure easy access to the upcoming Baiyappanahalli railway Coaching Terminal for residents.
The bridge, proposed in 2010, was intended to provide easy access between the Coaching Terminal and Swami Vivekananda Metro station. It ground to a halt three years later, with
70% of the work completed. A ramp was constructed on one side of the bridge but completion of the other ramp depended on the handing over of land by the Defence Ministry and this caused enormous delay.
“The Defence Ministry handed over the required 10,207 square metres of land to us in August 2019 and some work had begun when construction ground to a halt for five months due to the labour shortage caused by the pandemic,” said Chief Engineer, West, Constructions, South Western Railway, R K Singh.
Work started in October and has been going on at a brisk pace since then.
“We are targeting opening of the ROB by March 2021. Even if it gets a bit delayed, we are sure of opening it up by April next year,” he added. The ramp being constructed towards the Swami Vivekananda Metro Station has nine spans, with each span running into 30 metres.
“We are yet to build 270 metres of the ramp and 190 metres of the retaining wall for it. So a total length of 460 metres is to be constructed with the width running to 7.5 metres,” said another official.
“The wall of the Defence property presently falls within our construction area. Another wall needs to be constructed to safeguard Defence land before we can demolish the present wall,” he added.
A subway three metres in length and height of 2.7 metres was also being built for the use of two-wheelers and pedestrians. “The subway will give relief to many vehicle users. Work on it will begin within 10 days and we plan to open it for public by the first week of December,” he said.

Jul 05 2020 (20:22)   Train station near Bengaluru airport may be ready by August-end

BENGALURU: In a relief to airport-bound passengers, the long-awaited halt railway station — between Doddajala and Devanahalli — will be ready by August-end.
The new station will be close to the airport boundary and 2-3km away
from Kempegowda International Airport terminal. Bangalore International Airport Limited is building it and will operate shuttle bus services between the station and terminal.

platform is ready but station building work has been delayed due to labour shortage following the lock-down. BIAL said it intends to complete the project by August-end after which the railways would decide on operationalising the station.

In 2014, BIAL had suggested building a halt train station on a line which runs along the airport’s northeast boundary. In June 2019, South Western Railway gave a green signal to BIAL to construct the station. However, it missed several deadlines — December 2019, February 2020 and April 2020.

The station is expected to provide 27,000 airport employees a cheaper commuting option. BIAL and South Western Railway are in talks to start additional trains on the route, and their timings will be synced with the working hours of airport employees.

Currently, three pairs of trains operate on the Devanahalli line. SWR officials said regular mail, express and passenger services as well as suburban trains have been cancelled till August 12. “The halt station will be operational once regular services resume. We will take a decision to operate additional trains
based on demand,” said a senior SWR official.

I am in Bangalore, so can shed some more light on this.
It is clearly mentioned that it will benefit the employees. The cab fare from Airport to my place in Hebbal is good INR 850-1000 and for getting into the city in areas like Marathalli, Bellandur, Whitefield is around 1600 and to electronic city it is near to 2000 at times. The AC bus charges are in range of 300, 500 and 800 approximately for respective regions.
Now a traveller who uses airport once or twice a months this expense is ok,
but employees working at BIAL, its very very expensive and other than Cabs there is no medium for them to travel as airport is really situated good 30-35 km outside the city.
This will be a boon for daily travellers most of them being the employees to BIAL. I have seen asking for lifts when they walk by the road in late night which can be unsafe at times. Also, please note in next two years the T2 of BIAL will be ready which will increase the number of employees in BIAL.
Agree it is not as smooth transit as in Mumbai and Delhi but something is better than nothing. Peace :)

Mar 27 2017 (09:59)   DEMU service starts on the newly commissioned Pune-Daund Electrified section

PUNE: THE FIRST Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) service was inaugurated Saturday by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu through video linking from Kolhapur, where he attended a function. The service has been commenced following sustained demand for a local service between Pune and Daund.
The DEMU service between Pune and Daund will do two trips everyday. The first service Pune-Daund (71407) will leave Pune Station at 10.30 am reaching Daund at 12.35 pm, taking halts at Hadapsar, Manjari Budruk, Loni, Uruli Kanchan, Yavat, Khutbao, Kedgaon, Kadethan and Patas. The down service, Daund-Pune, will commence from Daund at 12.43 pm and will arrive at Pune Station at 2.13 pm. The other service Pune-Daund (70409) will depart from Pune Station at 2.20 pm and
will reach Daund at 4 pm. Daund-Pune (70410) will start from Daund at 4.14 pm and will reach Pune Station at 6.15 pm taking the above mentioned route.
After being in pipeline for nearly half a decade, the work on electrification of the Pune-Daund section was completed in November 2016 after spending a total sum of Rs 167 crore. The Pune Division had received three rakes, each containing 10 coaches from the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai in second week of January and underwent multiple trial runs. The coaches are equipped with state of the art facilities with a capacity of 1,081 passengers. The rakes are also equipped with GPS based passenger information system.
The announced timings of the service, however, haven’t gone well with the rail user groups. Vikas Deshpande, a Daund resident and a member of Zonal Railway User Consultative Committee, said, “What we needed was an early service from Daund to Pune that students, office goers and businessmen could reach Pune in the early hours so that they have the entire day for work. In fact, we had communicated to the DRM and Zonal General Manager that the best option would be to start a service as early as 5 am so that passengers reach Pune at the right time. Another service in the evening at about 6 pm would help people to return to their respective places…

PUNE: The survey for the long pending Nashik-Pune railway line is expected to get over by the month-end.Senior railway officials said a report on it would be sent to the railway ministry, which would then release the funds.A Pune-based private firm is conducting the survey. Officials at the Pune division of the central railways said the survey will give them a proper idea of the estimated cost of the project, besides other important details of ways to execute the project. "It is an ambitious project of the railways and we expect a lot of money will be needed for land acquisition," an official told TOI.
This year's railway budget has an allocation of Rs 2,425 crore for the line, which will span
across 265km. The line is proposed to run along towns like Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Manchar, Narayangaon, Alephata and Sinnar.
"Once the report comes through, we will be able to know the basics of construction and can plan accordingly. We will be able to know the number of bridges, road over bridges and tunnels required. We are sure the work will start by this year," the official said.
The survey will also propose the alignment of the track and study various other aspects like location of stations, loading-unloading places, possible freight and passenger quantum in detail.

agree to ur point but plz note that route will have some serious terrain issues (ghats) n to minimize the cost of projects, for constructing tunnels etc they have taken a longer route.. construction of road is easy while construction of railway line in ghats is challenging... hence the terrain is selected so as to minimise the interference with ghat region...

Feb 21 2017 (11:50)   As Promised By Suresh Prabhu, Mountain Man Dashrath Manjhi's Home To Get Rail Connectivity

Manjhi is famous for tearing apart rocky mountain single-handedly to carve out a road using chisel and hammer. It took him 22 years but Manjhi shortened the travel between the Atri and Wazirganj of Gaya town from 55 km to 15 km.
About a year ago, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu promised everyone to bring railways to Gehlore for a better connectivity after hearing Manjhi's heartbreaking story.
With Union finance minister Arun Jaitley sanctioning Rs 300 crore in this year's Budget for laying of a railway line between Wazirganj and Natesar in Gaya
district, Gehlaur, the native village of legendary 'mountain man' Dashrath Manjhi will now get trains.
Danapur divisional railway manager (DRM) R K Jha said the project would be completed on a priority basis up to a stretch of about 20km as a mark of respect to Manjhi. "The railway ministry has sanctioned adequate funds to complete the project within the stipulated time," he added.
The Budget has also sanctioned Rs 100 crore for the track doubling work between Kiul and Gaya (123km).
After the completion of the project, more passenger trains would run between Kiul and Gaya," the DRM added.
"Similarly, the Gaya bypass-Manpur line (2km), which will be laid at an expenditure of Rs 6.28 crore, would streamline traffic operations on the route. The Bihta-Aurangabad new line (118km) will also provide an alternative to people. The project will be completed at a cost of Rs 326 crore," Jha said.
