Farangipet Railway Station is located 12 km from Mangaluru.  
Railway activists and passenger associations have urged South Western Railway to develop Farangipet Railway Station on the outskirts of Mangaluru into a full-fledged station to ensure overall railway infrastructure development in the region.

Sudarshan Puttur, convener of Kukke Shree Subrahmanya Railway Balakedarara Hitharakshana Vedike, Puttur, has, in a memorandum to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and others, said that Farangipet was functioning as a passenger station when the meter gauge was in operation. After gauge conversion and handing over of the section to South Western Railway from Southern Railway, the former closed down the station citing meagre revenue, he said.
With terminal constraints at Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction railway stations to receive and dispatch new trains under Southern Railway, Farangipet was the most suitable station for development. The Railways has over 30 acres of land around Farangipet that could be exploited to its full potential by constructing a station building with three lines and maintenance facilities enabling train crossing, receiving and dispatching, he said.
Mr. Puttur noted that direct trains between Bengaluru and north coastal Karnataka, including Bengaluru-Karwar-Bengaluru Express, that take the Padil bypass without entering Mangaluru Junction could be given halt at Farangipet for the benefit of passengers from Mangaluru.
Padil, though, has a station, could not be developed into a full-fledged passenger station because of the hilly terrain and lack of access roads to the highway, he pointed out.
He also noted that South Western Railway had during 2018 cleared encroachment by fish vendors who had illegally been operating out of its land in Farangipet. South Western Railway had also ordered survey of land around Farangipet, Yedamangala and Kaniyur stations for their development in 2019, he said.
Mr. Puttur also noted that development of Farangipet Railway Station would also boost the demand for a railway division for Mangaluru.

aware of the issues that the location of the goods shed is creating and has started considering the proposal. “We are looking at
Ullal for the proposed goods shed,” he said adding that the proposal may take a year or two to materialise. The existing goods
shed could be utilised to set up coaching facilities, he hinted.
About doubling work between Mangaluru Central and Thiruvananthapuram railway stations, the general manager said this
could materialise by December 2021. Work on doubling between Nethravathi Junction and Mangaluru Central is expected to
be completed by March 2021 while a small section left out between Kottayam and Kayamkulam will be completed by
December 2021 paving the way for a double line between the two cities, he said.
SR is keen to go in for doubling between Mangaluru Central and the Kerala state capital via Alappuzha and this work is
expected to be completed by 2024 end, he said. Simultaneously, efforts are also on to double the tracks between
Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari and even this is slated for completion by December 2024, he said, adding on
completion, there will be multiple and faster ways for people to travel between the two cities.
John categorically denied that the Railway Board had sought its opinion to merge Mangaluru Junction and Mangaluru Central
Railway stations, only two stations in Karnataka under its jurisdiction with Hubballi based South Western Railway.
Supplementing this, Neenu Ittyerah, principal chief operations manager, SR said officers from the zonal railways are thrashing
out operational issues and even the Railway Board is looped in on the same.
Freight operations at New Mangalore Port could exponentially drive SR's freight operations and SR is contemplating suitable
action plans to divert traffic from road to rail. Besides exploiting the potential for coal, the zone is working to woo container and
edible oil traffic to railways. Neenu said SR could handle 60 rakes of coal, 10 rakes of fertilisers and two rakes of edible oil a
month from NMPT with potential for growth.

In yet another testimony that development projects take precedence over the environment, the state government on Friday approved the controversial Hubballi-Ankola rail line, a project that environmentalists have been opposing for over two decades. Urging more people to raise their voices against the project, environmentalist Akhilesh Chipli from SWAN and Man (Save-Wild-Atmosphere--Nature and Man) says, "This is a totally unnecessary and disastrous project, which will affect some 600 hectares of pristine forest and destroy over two lakh trees, some of which are 200-300 years old. The repercussions of such a move would be unimaginable, so it is time to come out and let our voices be heard, at least online, if not on the ground."

Board Members should quit en masse, as the chief minister and the chairman have gone ahead and approved a project that will spell doom for the Western Ghats. It is their moral responsibility and duty to protect the forests and remaining wildlife habitat of Karnataka. No amount of afforestation can bring back what would be lost in a tiger reserve. Actually there is a plan by SWR to bypass MAO & KR lines directly connecting to present line after crossing Majorda towards VSG, read somewhere 1 month back.

That is not for North bound trains, it for only SWR trains coming from Kulem side towards Vasco I believe. I remember reading it in Pink book, but not sure.

The Supreme Court has ordered for paying enhanced compensation of Rs 10 lakh per acre to those lands were acquired for the purpose of Hubli-Ankola Broad Gauge Railway Line.
A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant set aside the Karnataka High Court's order of November 24, 2008 that had reduced the compensation amount from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 5.10 lakh per acre.

In the matter, the HC had reduced compensation on a plea by the land acquisition officer who contended that the acquired land was actually ‘dry land’ and so other modes for determining its current market value should have been applied. 
The top court, however, preferred to restore the compensation awarded by the Reference Court-cum-Principal Civil Judge, Hubli.

The issue is not only enhanced compensation, there is also the issue of Western Ghats forest clearance. I think this line also cuts through Dandeli Tiger Reserve too.
