The Old Delhi Railway station is all set to become ‘New’. Decades old platform berths at the Puraani Dilli will be gone with a New Platform number. Which means the existing platform number 18 will be rechristened as platform number one and the existing platform number 1A will be platform no 16. The numbering of the platform beginning September 5, 2011 will be on the pattern of New Delhi Railway Station and both will have 16 platforms each. Northern Railway officials said that the rearrangement has been done to handle 24 coach trains at each platform. The Fatehpuri side main entrance of the Delhi Junction will have the revised platform no 1, while towards platform no 16 will be at the Kashmere Gate end side. This is one of the major works that was impending in the run-up to the renovation of the heritage building over century old station. “Several projects...

and works were undertaken and completed for the Commonwealth Games. The station area was beautified, entry and exit point were renovated to make it look more attractive. The change and revision of platform berthing is a very technical subject and thus it has taken time and now we are informing the user of the station well in advance,” said SK Sharma, chief public relations officer. The station was started with just two platforms and 1,000 passengers capacity in 1903, and now the station handles more than 1.8l lakh passengers and above 200 trains daily. Delhi Railway Station has been built by red stones to give the effect of historic Red Fort and Jama Masjid nearby. The station has six clock towers and no 4 tower is still in use as water tank.Delhi Junction, also known as Old Delhi Railway Station with station code DLI, is the oldest railway station of Delhi. It was built by the British in the year 1900 and opened in 1903 in the style of red-coloured fort, before independence. This has been an important railway station of the country, and complements the New Delhi Railway Station. It is served by the Chandni Chowk Metro station.
