BHOPAL: The West Central Railways Employees Union has alleged that senior officials of Bhopal division have been exploiting trackmen by making them do household work.Employees, who are responsible for ensuring rail tracks are in proper condition, are being made to wash cars, drop kids to school, fetch vegetables and do kitchen jobs by these officials, the union alleged. "We have raised the issue several times but in vain. This is putting safety of passengers at stake. A letter from employees at Harda railway station was submitted on October 26 to DRM, in which it was said that trackmen were being deployed by assistant divisional engineer beyond their duty hours and for personal work. But no action has been taken till now," said Arun Malviya, president of West central railways employees union.
of the employees, who claimed to be 'victim' of his seniors, said, "In my long service with railways, I have hardly spent a couple of years as trackman. For rest of the time, I was 'deputed' from one bungalow of a senior official to another."
"Trackmen are low wage employees and as such they are often picked up by senior officials for household work. Every senior official has about 5-6 employees serving under him," said union member.
DRM Alok Kumar was not available for comment. Division spokesman I A Siddiqui said, "This is a routine protest. DRM has been listening to their complaints and considering them regularly. We haven't got any such complaints."
