Railway employees including senior officials said the train had undergone
a routine overhaul and a complete maintenance check at the Permabur
carriage workshop only recently. "As soon as the train started from
Chennai, the loco pilot sensed that the 'soft braking' was not working
adequately. The train was examined at Arakkonam and Katpadi and it was
slowly run to Mangalore," said a source.
Officials, however, did not explain why the train was allowed to operate with the problem. "During examination, it was found
that the dust filter of the air pressure brake in one of the coaches was not removed before connecting it. This caused variance
while applying brakes. If the loco pilot tried to apply the brakes softly, it wouldn't have stopped as required," said a source.
Loco pilots said a similar problem had resulted in a South Central Railway train not stopping at a red signal two years ago.
"Luckily there was no accident. This is an indication of poor shop-floor work as well as carelessness in testing at the Perambur
workshop platform," said a senior official who confirmed the incident.
