Woes of last minute travellers are about to come to an end — thanks to Antyodaya Express, the unreserved train service catering to those who make their plans on the go, which will soon be launched by Indian Railways!
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu made the announcement in this year’s railway budget.
According to a report by Financial Express, Antyodaya Express will be ready by the end of December 2016. FE Online has quoted an undisclosed official from the railway ministry saying, “20 coaches and two power cars will be sent to the South
Eastern Railway division by December 25.”
Here are a few things to know about the brand new Antyodaya Express:
1. Antyodaya Express will be a long-distance, fully unreserved, superfast train service, operated on dense routes.
2. The trains will have facilities like water purifiers, indication display boards for toilet occupation, bio-toilets, cushioned luggage racks with coat hooks, and mobile charging points.

3. Antyodaya Express will also have fire extinguishers, anti-theft arrangement, LED lights, and enhanced capacity dustbins.
4. Although similar to the Deen Dayalu coaches introduced earlier this year for unreserved travel, Antyodaya Express will be a full train, with its coaches connected internally.

5. The trains are designed by Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The train’s LHB-type (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches have been manufactured in Chennai.
6. For the first time, Railways are trying out operations with locomotives at both ends. This will ensure faster acceleration and deceleration.

7. According The Hindu, two Antyodaya trains will be running on the Howrah- Ernakulam-Howrah and Hatia-Ernakulam-Hatia routes soon.

Fully unreserved trains on very long routes (about 2000 kms/ about 2 days) is not a logical move. IR should promote non ac SL travel for very long journeys.
Better option is to have more general coaches in Express/SF trains to cater to short distance/ non reserved paxs.
Does the report mean twin loco operation of express trains to reduce the journey time shall be tried with Antyoday trains. If so then, it is yet another example of financial myopia of IR. Extra loco means incurring of additional (& avoidable) expenditure by
IR. This must be done in the premium trains like Shatabdi/Raj which compete with airlines and where reduction of journey time shall result in higher occupancy and hence more profits to IR. For Antyodaya trains there is no financial return of expenditure incurred in double loco operation.
