NEW DELHI: Senior citizens who want to avail concessions on train tickets will now have to produce the 12-digit Aadhaar number.
An official said reservation of rail tickets for senior citizens will be directly linked to Aadhaar from April next year on a mandatory basis for availing concessions at both counter and for e-tickets.
The railways has decided to implement Aadhaar-based ticketing system in a two-phased manner. From January 1 to March 31, 2017, requirement of Aadhaar verification for getting concessional tickets for senior citizens will be on a voluntary basis. From April
1, it will be mandatory. The advance verification of senior citizens through Aadhaar has already been taken up by providing notice to these passengers to submit their unique identification number online on the IRCTC website or through the reservation offices from December 1 this year onwards.
An official said a major benefit of the step would be that it will stop touts and unauthorized agents from booking tickets in fake names and then selling these at a higher price.
