For commuters: The second entrance of the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station has turned to be a favourite place for short distance commuters.
Opening of a second entry to Thiruvananthapuram Central station opposite the KSRTC’s bus terminal complex on the Thampanoor side with a unreserved ticketing counter has come as a big relief to the commuters and railways alike.
The second entry, behind the premium parking lot managed by the Kudumbashree, has helped the railways to ease the congestion in the main entry of the station building and in the booking office located

near the entry to the foot overbridge.
The easy access to the second entry from the main road and to platform one from the adjacent bus terminal complex and the covered roof has fetched more patronage than the railways anticipated when the facility was mooted.
The new entry has turned to be a favourite place for the short distance commuters coming via KSRTC buses. Those who come to drop relatives and pick them up from the station also use the entry in view of the assured parking facilities.
‘Initially only 100 to 200 unreserved tickets were being sold daily from the counter that was functioning from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It has gone up to over 1,000 tickets showing the good patronage to the opening up of the new entry,” says Station Director, Thiruvananthapuram central, Ajay Kaushik.
The Railways have also improved the parking facilities in the premium parking lot by shifting some taxies that were parked here and by making small alterations in parking bays in a scientific way. The number of taxies being parked had been limited and they have been given a designated area.
With this, an additional 80 motorcycles and 20 cars can be parked for those willing to pay extra money for premium parking. The revenue from the premium parking lot has also doubled from the daily ₹1,000 after more vehicles were allowed and the second entry opened, Mr. Kaushik said.
The railways have decided to introduce more commercial activities near the new second entry by setting up stalls and without disturbing the movement of the commuters, he said. The Station Director said the stalls will be limited and this will fetch revenue to railways and turn handy to commuters.
The work to provide more parking for the four-wheelers in the parking lot on the flyover side by demolishing the old building is nearing completion. As much as 50 additional cars can be accommodated in the parking lot.
The Consultative Committee for the central station, that met on Tuesday, has decided to seek sponsorship for setting up small gardens, install mural paintings and create the needed passenger amenities inside and outside the station.
