B.S. Yeddyurappa, Shivamogga MP, said the Ministry of Railways has been asked to strengthen rail connectivity between Shivamogga and Bengaluru.
Mr. Yeddyurappa told presspersons here on Monday that he had submitted a memorandum to Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu in this regard in New Delhi recently. In the memorandum, it has been requested to introduce a new train between Shivamogga and Bengaluru at midnight and to extend the service of Shivamogga-Yeshwantpur train that plies three to five days in a week. Mr. Prabhu responded positively to the request, he said.
The Ministry
of Railways has planned to take up the work of Birur-Shivamogga track doubling at the cost of Rs. 500 crore, commission a new railway lane between Talaguppa-Siddapur at the cost of Rs. 320 crore and construct railway underbridge near Tunga bridge in the city.
Mr. Yeddyurappa requested the State government to release its share of funds for these projects to ensure their commissioning in an expedited manner.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the work of construction of a 2.16 km long bridge across the Sharavati backwaters to connect Kalasavalli with Ambaragodlu villages is being prepared. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 350 crore. The foundation laying ceremony for the project will be conducted shortly. The Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari will be invited for the same, Mr Yeddyurappa said.
Replying to a query, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that, he would apprise Union Minister for Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh and Union Minister for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the last date fixed for procurement of arecanut under the market intervention scheme and to raise the ceiling fixed on the quantum of arecanut to be procured.
Spot inspection
Meanwhile, the residents of Kanakanagar, Surya Layout and Dooravani Extension in the city submitted a memorandum to Mr. Yeddyurappa requesting him to direct Ministry of Railways to drop the plan to close down the railway level crossing (LC 51) across the road that connects these residential areas and to develop a new approach road instead from railway level crossing (LC 52) across Sominakoppa Road. Mr. Yeddyurappa conducted a spot inspection and assured the residents that he would discuss the issue with Railway officials.
