CANSAULIM: The proposed double tracking of Colem-Vasco section by south-western railway (SWR) has drawn opposition from villagers of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim (CAC) and adjoining villages, as the villagers have raised fears of severe impact and damage to their heritage houses. The non-provision of a pedestrian bridge at the Cansaulim railway station for decades is a violation of human rights, vice-president of CAC civic and consumer forum, Marconi Correia alleged. The railway runs close to the age-old St Lawrence Chapel at Arossim, built in 1599, while the heritage structures built circa 1754, prior to the laying of the railways, president Cansaulim villagers action committee Antonio D'Silva said. The railways carried dock labour and passengers from Colem to Mormugao harbour, but expansion proposed is for carrying coal and other materials, the villagers claimed.
citizen Joao Barros Pereira said that the CAC and other villages are adorned with several heritage and residential houses. "These are priceless and cannot be replaced. Heritage houses are not only the villagers' pride, but belong to everyone in Goa," he said.
While maintaining the existing track or the proposed doubling of it, it would be prudent to consider a viable option, or it will be an insult to the local intelligence and disrespect to their rights, Pereira said.
Local resident Malisa Simoes demanded that railway authorities plan a station at Utorda instead of a loop near Velsao-Pale, to connect Konkan railway to SWR.
The village-level committee of CAC had suggested a tunnel connecting KR to SWR at Dabolim, connecting Dabolim airport, thus protecting the farmers and their fields. Late Matanhy Saldanha was a signatory to this suggestion, villagers said.
