The Western Railway showed red flag to the Bombay high court's idea of running trains from Churchgate to suburbs on the CR route like Thane and termed it as “not feasible“ on Thursday .
Additional divisional railway manager (WR) Shailesh Gupta told a division bench of Justice Visyasagar Kanade and Justice Nutan Sardessai that there were logistic and technical obstacles. “WR would be required to lay two new tracks but due to non-availability of land it is not possible. There are settlements or other obstructions,“ he said.
The judges asked the railway board to
explore the possi bility and asked them to set up a department that can plan for the next 20 years. “Mumbai is the financial hub of India and a large section of the population travels by trains. It is the duty of all the authorities to ensure the safety of the commuters, who are the working force and who make the city what it is,“ said Justice Kanade.
Senior railway officers, BMC, state and police officials presented measures taken to tackle accidents and deaths on railway premises. Over 80 lakh passengers travel on the Central, Western and Harbour line each day . The court said it was satisfied that the number of accidents and deaths had fallen this year.
Advocate Jamshed Mistry , amicus curiae (friend of the court) in the case and advocate Arif Doctor, counsel for petitioner Samir Zaveri said that a timeline needs to be set to implement various steps to be taken by CR and WR. The measure include putting up boundary walls, raising platform heights, providing foot overbridges with escalators and lifts and automatic door closers. While the railways have set up around emergency medical rooms at 22 stations which have witnessed 100 accidents last year, the petitioner urged the court to direct that EMRs be set up at stations which have seen more than 50 accidents. The HC has scheduled further hearing of the case on January 30, 2017.
HC: WR girls don't marry CR boys?
Is it true that girls who travel on Western Railway do not want to marry boys from the Central Railway due to over crowding in trains,“ the Bombay high court asked in a light hearted moment during the hearing on death on tracks. “We have heard that marriages are based on which suburban railway line one uses,“ said Justice Vidyasagar Kanade in a humorous aside.

In general, WR suburban area is considered as more posh area as compared to CR suburban area since decades, when the crowding was maximum in WR especially in CCG-VR locals.
Today crowd in CR suburban has increased due to much faster population growth in Navi Mumbai, Mill area redevelopment in CR suburban area and tremendous growth in Thane, Kalyan region since last 2-3 decades.

WR suburban rail service is much better as compared to CR
Lesser breakdowns, lesser delays
Also more number of services especially from western suburbs like Bandra, Andheri, Borivali to Churchgate.
In addition few services also ply from intermediate stations like Malad and Goregaon for Churchgate during peak hours.
