Thanjavur: In a bid to seal its position as the fifth cleanest railway station in the country and climb to the top, commuters as well as tourists have urged the railway department to make all tracks at the Kumbakonam railway station as washable aprons. This, they said, will facilitate people engaged in cleaning the tracks to execute their work more effectively.
In a country-wide survey of major railway stations for cleanliness conducted by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) last year, Kumbakonam railway station in Trichy railway division was adjudged the fifth cleanest railway station in the country.
has been to be maintained by the officials of the health department. Commuters said that if all the tracks are made as washable aprons, as is the case at Trichy railway junction, the entire station will be more clean
"The washable apron is meant to ensure cleanliness at the station. All major stations including Trichy junction have washable aprons along platforms," said A Giri, member of DRUCC and vice-president of Thanjavur District Rail Users Association.
"Already cleanliness exists at the station. We have got an award for it. If washable apron is established, it will become an added feature for this station," he said. However, a railway official said that as bio-toilets are being installed in all coaches in a phased manner there was no need to construct washable aprons.
Another major shortcomings at the station are the short second and third platforms, said Giri, while adding that commuters, especially during Mahamaham, found it difficult to board and alight trains at the platforms. Uzhavan-Mysore express commuters, especially those travelling on unreserved coaches, said that they found it difficult to alight.
"Due to the short length of the platforms, the railways is hesitant in operating long-distance trains and shuttles between Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai. Land acquisition has been stated as the reason for the delay in execution of platform extension works,"said Giri.
However, senior officials from the engineering department said that extension can be carried out even without acquiring any land. "It can be done with a minor realignment made in the yard," said a rail user, while appealing to the officials to execute the work without delay.
