in buses, at metro stations or by the Railways after December 10.
The government had earlier allowed the use of Rs 500 notes for a number of purposes, including public transport, purchasing railway, metro, and airline tickets (at airports), and railway catering till midnight of December 15.
The old Rs 500 note, as well as the Rs 1000 note were removed from circulation at midnight, between November 8 and November 9. New Rs 500 notes, and Rs 2000 notes have been issued since then.
The Reserve Bank of India has also announced that new Rs 20, Rs 50, and Rs 100 notes will be released, but added that the old versions of these denominations will continue to be legal tender.
