Despite toughest challenges during complete lockdown imposed from 22nd March, 2020 and the current partial lockdown, Western Railway has done commendable work by loading8687 rakes of goods trains till9th July, 2020, including various essential commodities such as POL - 955, Fertilizers - 1364, Salt - 485, Foodgrain- 90, Cement - 612, Coal - 342, Containers – 4257& General Goods - 41 rakes, amounting to17.84 Million Tonnes to different states of the country, including North East region. In addition to this 391 rakes of Millennium Parcel Van and Milk Tank Wagons containing various essential commodities such as medicine, medical kits, frozen food, milk powder and liquid milk were loaded to Northern & North East region. Total 17076 Freight trains were interchanged with other Railways including 8540trains handed over and 8536trains taken over at different interchange points of Western Railway. of BOXN and 495 rakes of BTPN were unloaded at various stations over Western Rly,despite shortage of labourers.
According to a press release issued by Western Rly, since 23rd March to 9th July, 2020, commodities weighing more than 73 thousand tonnes have been transported by Western Rly through its 389 parcel special trains, which mainlyincluded agricultural produce, medicines, fish, milk etc.The earnings generated through this transportation, has been approx Rs 23.43 crore. During this period, 55 milk special trains were run by Western Rly, with a load of more than 41 thousand tonnes and 100% utilization of the wagons, generating revenue of approx Rs 7.13 crore. Similarly, 324 Covid-19 special parcel trains with a load of more than 27,700 tonnes were also run to transport various essential commodities, for which the revenue earned was above Rs 14 crore. In addition to this, 10 indented rakes carrying 4355 tonnes were also run with almost 100% utilization generating revenue of more than Rs 2.16 crore.WR has scheduled to run various timetabled Parcel special trains during lockdown period to different parts of the country. Out of these, three Parcel Special trains, including a milk rakedeparted from various stations of WR viz. Bandra Terminus – Ludhiana and Porbandar – Shalimarand a special milk rake departed from Palanpur to Hind Terminalon 10th July, 2020.
LOSS OF PASSENGER EARNINGS DUE TO LOCKDOWN
The total loss of earnings over Western Railway on account of Corona Virus, has been over Rs 1662 crore, which includes Rs 243.25 crore for suburban section and Rs 1419.09 crore for non-suburban. In spite of this, resulting to cancellation of tickets since 1st March, 2020 till 9th July, 2020, Western Railway has ensured torefundRs. 389.47 crore. It's worth mentioning that in this refund amount, Mumbai division alone, has ensured refund of more than Rs 185.46 crore. Till now, 59.79 lakh passengers have cancelled their tickets over entire Western Railway & have received their refund amount accordingly.
