Members of the Tamil Nadu Association for Rights of the Differently-abled and Caregivers staged a protest in front of the railway junction here pressing for a charter of demands on Friday.
The association members demanded that the Centre should immediately pass the Rights of Persons with Disability Bill.
The present legislation, Persons with Disability Act, dealt with people who had seven types of disabilities, while there were lot more types of disabilities that were affecting the normal life of the people, said its president, T. Kumaravel. The United Nations convention in 2007 had
mandated the changes in legislation to provide rights to the disabled people, he said.
The bill was sent to the Standing Committee of the Parliament in 2014, and it has given its approval for the new legislation.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who had promised to enact the new law to protect the rights of the differently-abled people in the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha election, should fulfil the promise, he said.
Former Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA, R. Annadurai addressed the protestors.
