* In the last 3 decades, a lot of improvement in passenger amenities and induction of new technologies had been brought in the BG coaches/ locomotives/ tracks. Similar upgradation has not been done in NG/MG coaches/ locomotives/ tracks.
* Since IR has decided that it shall retain some heritage NG/MG lines, several upgradations are required to improve the services on these heritage lines which are a matter of prestige for IR like:
(1) Strengthening of tracks-
strengthening...
more... of foundation to prevent frequent landslide at selected locations
Use of sturdier rails and sleepers to permit higher speed, smoother ride and safer journey
(2) Improvement in coaches- New design coaches with glass walls & top which shall enable the tourists to enjoy full 180 degree vision of scenic surroundings to attract tourists and increase revenue.
(3) Commensurate improvement in loco power to haul longer trains at higher speeds.
(4) Development of prominent stations as shopping malls cum entertainment points cum eating joints.
(5) Development of hotels on the prominent stations to give boost to tourism, and earn revenue. Advertisement rights at stations/ trains are good source of revenue.
* Toy trains take too long a time as compared to the road journey and are therefore not liked very much by tourists for traveling. They often have a short joyride which is not beneficial for IR. If the journey time of the upgraded system is at par or comparable to road journey, the patronage & popularity of these train shall grow multifold.
* It was reported that Nilgiri mountain railways in incurring an annual loss of Rs 26 crores. This loss can be avoided if above modes of revenue and tourism-boosting measures are taken.
