Work on electrification of Yelahanka-Devanahalli railway line is progressing. Those heading to the airport can expect an electric train in the near future. The South Western Railways (SWR) have taken up an electrification project which would facilitate introduction of an electric train to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) halt station.
As of now, the track from Bengaluru City to Yelahanka and Yeshwantpur-Yelahanka is electrified, but the trains between Yelahanka and KIA halt station are diesel locomotives.
A senior railway official told Bangalore Mirror, “The work of electrification between Yelahanka and Devanahalli
is going on and likely to be completed by February next year. The biggest hurdle is the KPTCL power line over the railway line at the 14th km. It is too low and poses danger to the trains. We are holding talks with KPTCL on increasing the height of the power lines. Post-February, once the electrification is done, the line will be subjected to inspection by Commission of Railway Safety and approval by the railway board would pave way for introduction of electric trains.”
Chief Public Relations Officer and Deputy General Manager, SWR E Vijaya said the project was part of electrification of the 149 -km railway line from Yelahanka to Bangarpet via Chikkaballapur, Sidlaghatta, Chintamani, Srinivaspur and Kolar. “The project was sanctioned in the financial year 2018-19 at a cost of Rs 138.21 crore and is executed by Central Organisation for Railway Electrification. Currently, work is in progress on the 23-km stretch between Yelahanka and Devanahalli and it was to be completed in June 2021. The tentative deadline for Devanahalli-Bangarapet stretch was pegged at March 2022.”
Prakash Mandoth (President-Bengaluru Metro and Suburban passengers’ association) welcomed the move. “This was a long-pending demand. While airports across the world are connected by trains, we don’t have any train connectivity so far. The Metro is also far away. Once electrified, there will be a provision of running a 16-car MEMU train which will be double the capacity and also be a faster train. And this is an eco-friendly option too. But, we the Railways must complete the project in a time-bound manner.” Shatrunjay Sharan, who goes to the airport often says both buses and cabs to the airport are expensive. “We hope the train will provide seamless travel to the airport at a comparatively lower cost.”
KIA halt station
The railway board is yet to finally approve trains to the KIA halt station though the station has been ready for a few months now. “These are the new services proposed: From Majestic (departure at 4.45 am and 9 pm) to Devanahalli, Yelahanka (departure 7 am) to Devanahalli. The return services are from Devanahalli to Yelahanka, Majestic and Bengaluru Cantonment (6.30 am, 7.45 am and 10.30 pm). All approvals are awaited. These six are new trains apart from eight already running in the section for which stoppages will be provided at KIA station,” said Vijaya.
