There have been 89 fatal accidents in two years.Rail passenger associations from the Kalwa-Thane belt have proposed to create a platform right outside the Kalwa car shed where trains are parked. This is mainly because of the problems faced by passengers in boarding the trains and incidents of people falling from the trains, particularly during peak hours.Over the last couple of days, representatives from these associations met the Passenger Amenities Committee, which was inspecting a few suburban stations in Mumbai. On January 16, the passenger associations had staged a dharna over problems faced by suburban rail commuters from Kalwa. On January 21, the Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh wrote a letter to the Central Railway requesting permission to build a platform next to the Kalwa carshed, where trains are usually parked. “There is space for constructing a platform next to the rail line right after the Kalwa carshed on the Kalyan end. It...
will be convenient for people and would also save the lives of those who fall from moving trains,” said Siddesh Desai, member of the Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh.“The local trains starting from this carshed platform can then go towards CSMT,” added Desai.Currently, the local trains use both entrance/exit points towards Kalyan and CSMT end. “It is very difficult to create an additional platform next to the carshed. It will literally block the path of other trains and the tracks will have to be remodeled,” said a CR official. Moreover, this also possesses security threat to the trains parked inside the carshed.According to the Kalwa Parsik Passengers’ Association, 89 fatal accidents have been recorded between Kalwa and Parsik in two years. Many commuters boarding from the Thane-Diva belt have fallen off crowded moving trains while hanging on the footboard. Kalwa and Mumbra railway stations see around 4 lakh passengers every day while there over over 6.5 lakh daily commuters in Thane.
