Railway officials and passengers came together on Saturday to celebrate the completion of 150 years of service of the Karur railway station.
Though there was no grand function to commemorate the occasion, officials distributed sweets to the passengers of Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express train. Vijay Kumar Rai, Station Master, Jayagopal, Principal Health Inspector and others distributed sweets to the passengers.
According to sources, the first train from Tiruchi to Erode was operated via Karur station on December, 3, 1866. A weighing machine, which was brought from London in 1890, is still being used at Karur
Railway Station.
A total of 36 express and passengers trains are operated via Karur Railway Junction daily. On an average, it handles more than 4,000 passengers.
