HARIDWAR: The loco pilot of Nanda Devi express has been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act after the speeding train ran over and killed two elephants in Sitapur village, about 10 kilometres from Haridwar railway station on Friday. The pachyderms, aged between 25 and 30 years, were found dead with their limbs broken and tusks fractured.Divisional forest officer of Haridwar forest division Akash Verma told TOI that a preliminary investigation revealed that the train was within its speed limits at the time of the accident. Haridwar railway officials also claimed that train was not exceeding the speed limits.“The speed of Nanda Devi express train on April 19 was 100 km per hour at the time of the incident, which is normal for a superfast train. However, an inquiry will be conducted by the loco section of the Dehradun railway station regarding the matter.”
