PUNE: The new foot overbridge (FOB) at the railway station here is expected to be completed by July.
The 12-metre-wide FOB, connected to every platform, will provide the much-needed relief to passengers. Earlier, the crucial FOB was expected to be ready by May-end. Officials agreed that there had been delays but the project would be up and ready for passengers with two escalators by July.
on the stairs, which will connect the FOB to the platforms, is currently under way. Platform No. 4 and 5 will see the connection within a week. Around the same time, one of the exits on the FOB near the divisional railway manager’s office on Tadiwala Road will be connected. We were hoping to finish all the work and make the FOB operational by May-end, but there has been a delay. However, we do expect the facility will be ready by early July,” an official of the Pune rail division told TOI.
The official said some major issues at the Pune station, which witnesses passenger traffic of over a lakh everyday, would be resolved once the FOB was ready.
“We have observed that a majority of people use the old FOB as it is the only bridge with connections to all the platforms in addition to exits towards the both ends of the station. There are two more FOBs but one among them only connects three platforms. The other, although connected to all the platforms, doesn’t have exits towards the both ends of the station,” the official said.
Essentially, since the old FOB is widely used, the situation becomes rather unorganized frequently. “We have taken several measures to ensure that the FOB remains free from heavy crowding and people walk in an organized manner but the situation has improved only a little. With a broader and better FOB in place from July, we are sure that the crowd will get segregated and people will be safe. At present, the main focus is on passenger safety at stations and on trains,” the official said.
On Sunday afternoon, Sridhar K, a passenger, tweeted to the railway minister mentioning the scenario. “Experience at Pune station overbridge at 17.30-18.00 on May 13. Near stampede situation like Elphinstone. Late announcement of platform, certain overbridges closed, complete chaos and one solitary RPF man. Children, elders suffered. Fortunately, nothing happened,” he wrote.
To ease the bottleneck, towards the evening hours, RPF staff is present on the old FOB to ensure people do not halt for long.
“Two escalators will be coming up on both the ends of the station. These will be connected to the FOB. The other two escalators will be installed later. We agree that there is a problem at present and we’re trying to finish the work without much delay,” the official added.
