MUMBAI: Western Railway (WR) has gone cashless by installing points of sale (POS) machines for passengers to carry out transactions for tickets with debit and credit cards.
WR's Mumbai division has 125 counters of passenger reservation system (PRS) to book reserved tickets of long-distance trains. It also has 330 unreserved ticketing system (UTS) for suburban railway card ticket and season tickets.
WR's divisional railway manager Mukul Jain said, "Initially, we will provide 41 terminals at 26 stations. We have already begun installing POS machines at seven stations, which includes three at Malad, two
at Vasai and one each at Kandivli and Jogeshwari"
WR has also sent a proposal to set up POS at suburban stations for UTS. The official said, "To begin with, 10 such machines will be provided for UTS tickets. The first is likely to be installed at Churcghate in 10 days."
Prior to government's intent of declaration to go cashless, WR already had one counter reserved for debit and credit card transaction for reserved tickets at Mumbai Central and Churchgate.
A WR official said, "In future, State Bank of India will provide infrastructure to allow transaction via pay wallets and Unified Payment Interface (UPS) systems."
Centre of Railway Information System is also developing a system to book tickets through debit/credit cards through Automated Ticketing Machines .
