India's Union Cabinet has approved the phase one development of the Rs114.2bn ($1.68bn) Pune Metro Rail Project in the state of Maharashtra.
The rail corridor will cover a length of 31.254km and consist of two corridors.
Corridor-1 between Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal (PCMC) and Swargate will cover a length of 16.589km, while Corridor-2 connecting Vanaz to Ramwadi will cover 14.665km.
"MAHA-METRO will be equally owned
by the Indian and Maharashtra Governments." Set to be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail (MAHA-METRO), the project is slated for completion in five years from the date of start of work as per the detailed project report (DPR).
MAHA-METRO will be equally owned by the Indian and Maharashtra Governments.
The Pune Metro Rail Project will be covered under the legal framework of the Metro Railways (Construction of Works) Act, 1978; the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002; and the Railways Act, 1989.
The approved project will provide the required connectivity to commuters.
Passing through some of the busiest routes in the Pune Metropolitan Area, the project is expected to reduce the traffic congestion and introduce a pollution-free transportation system in the city.
The Pune Metropolitan Area includes Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
The existing Nagpur Metro Rail (NMRCL) will be reconstituted into MAHA-METRO for implementation of all metro projects, including Pune Metro Rail Project Phase I.
