Politics over the inauguration of Pune metro's works heated up further on Tuesday when the ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) announced that the function will be held on December 23 in the presence of party president Sharad Pawar, a day prior to the function which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mayor Prashant Jagtap has ordered the ci vic administration to prepare for the ceremony at Kamgar Putala in Shivajinagar.
Jagtap alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was utilizing the inauguration function to promote its political agenda. NCP has never brought
politics into the city's developmental projects and party leaders will not attend the function on December 24, he added.
Sources said the NCP's decision on a separate inauguration was triggered by Modi's trip to the city ahead of the civic polls and the lack of commitment by BJP leaders to invite Pawar as the chief guest for the function along with Modi.
On Tuesday , senior BJP lea der and district guardian minister Girish Bapat, while addressing a news conference, said the invites for the December 24 function will be sent as per PMO protocol since the PM is attending it.
Without clarifying if Pa war will be on the dais, Bapat said, “It is a state government function and all invites will be sent as per the protocol.“
Bapat said one dais will ha ve Modi and chief minister De vendra Fadnavis, mayors of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad and the other will be for MPs, MLAs and all party leaders from PMC and top officials. Leader of the Congress in PMC Arvind Shinde said his party will attend the ceremony on December 23. “Our party has already written to the mayor's office to invite Pawar for the inauguration of the metro works. My party leaders will attend the function organized by PMC,“ he said.
The invitation says Fadnavis will preside over function while Pawar will be the chief guest. There is also a mention of Bapat, Union minsiter Prakash Javadekar, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray among the list of special attendees.
