TRICHY: Members of the divisional railway users' consultative committee (DRUCC) who met on Wednesday reiterated their demand to operate an intercity express from Trichy to Bengaluru, while appealing to officials to extend the insurance cover to commuters who book their tickets at reservation counters. Submitting his memorandum, Swamimalai S Vimalnathan, member of DRUCC pressed the need for including passengers who book their tickets through reservation counters too, as the railways has announced insurance cover for those who book their tickets online, he said.
Meanwhile, A Giri, another member reminded about the extension of platforms 2 and 3 in Kumbakonam to accommodate 24-coach trains which has been a long-pending demand. Passengers from Uzhavan Express find it difficult to get down which is mostly
received on platform 2.
Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai stations attract hundreds of pilgrims visiting Navagragha temples from various parts of the country. Availability of retiring rooms in both stations are not adequate to cope with the demand. Hence, at least 10 retiring rooms and a dormitory may be provided at both stations, he said.
Selvaraj, National Federation for Blind and Maheswari Vaiyapuri said despite repeated appeals for separate coaches for differently abled people to be attached in all trains, the coaches are completely withdrawn. So, he requested that a separate coach be attached for differently abled in all trains. Announcements about coach position should also be made so that differently abled board the train comfortably.
Chairman of chamber of commerce J J L Gnanaraj said that at present only one train is being operated to Bengaluru via Trichy during night. He requested to take up the long-pending demand of Trichy traders and public to operate a day time intercity or Shatabdi Express between the two cities via Karur, Namakkal and Salem. In their reply, officials said the proposal would be examined and forwarded to the headquarters. Gnanaraj also appealed to thrown open the second entrance of the Trichy Junction.
DRUCC member Palani Baskar demanded the operate new fast passenger train from Thanjavur to Pollachi which would help passengers reach Palani temple directly and also help Dindigul passengers to reach Coimbatore via Pollachi.
Another member A S M Kannan sought the laying of a new road between Ariyalur station and NH 136, as the road is 200 metre away from the station. Once it materialises, it would become very useful to the public to connect with both Perambalur and Thanjavur districts. He also requested to lay a 60 feet road connecting Ariyalur station and NH 136 road.
Divisional Railway Manager AK Agarwal chaired the meeting where 17 members representing passenger associations, consumer organizations, chambers of commerce, nominees of MPs, representatives of handicapped associations and government nominees participated.
