MADURAI: Rail users in the region appealed to the railway ministry to operate a Jan Shatabdi Express train to Coimbatore - the industrial hub of Western Tamil Nadu - from Southern districts as the train connectivity from the region to Coimbatore is minimum. A day time train is the need of the hour to cater to the huge passenger traffic to Coimbatore, they say.
At present, a day time passenger train from Nagercoil to Coimbatore takes more than 13 hours to cross the 533 kilometres, while the night time train from Nagercoil to Coimbatore, which has link express attached from Tuticorin, take 10.55 hours. There are couple of more trains from Nagercoil to Coimbatore but they are operated through Kerala via Ernakulam
and Palakkad.
Indian Railways operate Jan Shatabdi trains between important cities. When compared to fully air-conditioned Shatabdi trains, Jan Shatabdi trains are affordable with both air-conditioned and non-airconditioned chair car coaches. There are 20 such trains in Indian Railways and two of them are in Tamil Nadu, namely 12077/12078 Chennai Central - Vijayawada and 12083/12084 Mayiladuthurai - Coimbatore Jan Shatabdi Express trains.
Kanyakumari District Rail Users Association (KKDRUA) has appealed to the railway ministry to come out with a Jan Shatabdi Express from Nagercoil to Coimbatore via Madurai - Dindigul - Pollachi. Day time train operation is skeletal in the region and newly converted Palani - Pollachi section is very much underutilised, the association said. A small section of gauge conversion works between Pollachi - Podanur is underway and likely to be completed by mid-2017, according to railway statements.
"A Jan Shatabdi could be announced in the next budget and could be operated very well from the next railway calendar usually rolled out in October. A Jan Shatabdi kind of train that can negotiate distance with speed and at affordable fare will be of great help to people in the region" said P Edward Jeni, secretary of KKDRUA.
"We have travelled as family in Mayiladuthurai - Coimbatore Jan Shatabdi between Mayiladuthurai and Trichy. The journey was pleasant and we reached our destination on time. It will be great to have one Jan Shatabdi from south to place like Coimbatore," said S Vijayaraghavan from Madurai.

Technically, is it fair to charge the higher ticket rates applicable for Jan Satabdi trains, if operated with normal LHB/ICF coaches? For example, ERS - ALLP - QLN Jan Chair car fare is Rs. 105/-. For normal express, ticket fare from ERS to QLN via ALLP is Rs. 75(including reservation charge). For SF train, this will go upto Rs. 90/-, which is lesser than JS fare. So JS indeed is charging a premium on ticket fare over & above SF rates.
Hence, presume JS charges a premium not only for faster run, but for better, improved seats as well.
would love to see new JS coaches with LHB technology.
