The suburban and MRTS services in the city came to a standstill on Monday owing to the flooding of tracks and the snapping of overhead lines.
A senior official of the Southern Railway said initially, only the MRTS services between Chennai Beach and Velachery and the services from Moore Market complex suburban railway station to Gummidipoondi/Sulurpettai were suspended at around 10 a.m. The trains stuck in different stations on the two routes were moved to the nearest railway terminus. But with the weather condition becoming worse and incidents of snapping of overhead electric lines being reported from the three routes, it was decided to suspend all suburban train services in Chennai from 11.15 a.m., he added.
the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) operating only ‘skeletal’ services in various areas, the complete suspension of the suburban train services resulted in residents getting stranded at railway stations. A large number of residents were forced to walk long distances or look for costlier options such as autorickshaws to reach their destinations.
James, who commutes regularly on the MRTS to his office in Chepauk, finding the services cancelled, came all the way to his office on his two-wheeler from Pallikaranai. Several office-goers who had somehow reached their offices were worried throughout the day about how they would get home.
Southern Railway General Manager Vasishta Johri initially said that suburban train services resumed operations in a phased manner from 8.30 p.m.. He said a large number of maintenance staff were engaged in restoring the overhead electricity lines and also clearing the branches that had fallen on the track. However, he added train services would be operated in a limited manner. But services did not resume throughout the night.
