LUCKNOW: In a historic moment for the city of monuments, Lucknow Metro sped on the elevated metro corridor across Kanpur road after CM Akhilesh Yadav and his father SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav flagged it off for trials amidst cheers from hundreds of onlookers on Thursday. Lucknow Metro has completed the 8.5km priority section in record time of two years. Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) started Metro construction on September 27, 2014 from Transportnagar and laid tracks till Charbagh.
People started gathering at Transportnagar depot from early morning for a first look of the Metro train in a red drape. Before the CM and his political fleet arrived at the venue, a huge colourful rangoli (floor art) depicting the LMRC logo was
displayed on the stage. CM and SP Chief along with other SP workers arrived at the depot at about 11am and first went to see operation control centre (OCC) from where the trains are operated. Mulayam, along with his two daughters-in-law Dimple and Aparna Yadav, brother Shivpal Yadav and son Akhilesh Yadav lit the inauguration lamp at 12 noon.
SP functionaries Azam Khan, Rajendra Chowdhary, Ahmed Hasan and Abhishek Mishra joined the first family of SP at the event. SP workers applauded LMRC team and its principal advisor E Sreedharan for their constant hard work to run the Metro on a stiff-target. CM and Mulayam switched on the symbolic start button of the train, installed on the stage.
CM said, "Lucknow Metro is an example of how a mammoth task can be achieved despite a short deadline if there is will to put in hard work. We have already begun construction of Kanpur Metro and would also lay foundation stone of Varanasi Metro before 2017 elections." He then unveiled the train which stood in bright colour combination of red, black and grey colours even as people cheered aloud.
CM also checked the interiors and features of Metro rail like operator's cabin, handle bars, windows, etc and sat beside Mulayam to check the seating facility. He met the first two women pilots Pratibha and Prachi and congratulated them for their role in the trial run. CM asked his wife and Kannauj MP Dimple Yadav to hand over the train's key to the women pilots.
CM and Mulayam flagged off the train, which ran at a relatively higher speed of about 20km per hour than the prescribed 10-12km/hr speed on depot track. It soon sped past the actual corridor from Transportnagar Station and moved swiftly through the seven stations. The train stopped for 4-5 minutes at each station to check if there was any obstruction. After clearance at each step, it returned to the depot after 2.5 hours.
