BENGALURU: A good news for the suburban railway campaigners and those working in Whitefield. South Western Railway (SWR) will run a service between Krantivira Sangolli Rayana (Bengaluru City) station in Majestic and Whitefield. The train, which would depart from 8.45am from KSR Station, will reach Whitefield by 9.40am. SWR officials said that train service between Ramanagaram and Bengaluru will be extended to accommodate this trip. Currently, there are three trips between Ramanagaram and Bengaluru. train will return to KSR (Bengaluru city) at 11.10am, after departing from Whitefield at 10.30am. "This will relieve peak traffic time and would help many who are travelling to Whitefield," said Sanjiv Agarwal, division railway manager of Bengaluru division of SWR. The train stops at Cantonment, Bengaluru East, Byappanahalli, KR Puram and Hoodi stations enroute to Whitefield. Even though the new train service gives hope to many, there is skepticism as well. During the recent campaign by citizens for suburban railway line, the problem delays in the short services were highlighted. "Yes, there are problems. The KSR-Bengaluru station area is one of the congested areas in terms of railway operations. Mechanical problems or delay in auxiliary services could delays schedules. But short distance trains will be given a priority," Agarwal assured. Talking about other plans, he said the work of Byapanahalli railways station has begun and the work of 7 platforms and 3 pit lines would finish by 2018. Once the work is completed, at 15-16 train can be diverted to Bypanahalli, decongesting Bengaluru, the official added. Also 15 trains would converted from diesel multiple unit trains (DEMU) to Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU), which would increase the passengers capacity of these trains from 1,000 to 2,500 and reduce the turnaround time as well. Railways have requested Rs 360 crore from the state government for the same project, he said.
