Commuters in the city are now demanding the South Western Railway (SWR) run suburban services as tracks are free with most long-distance trains suspended.
Rail activists say this is a chance to operate more trains for suburban commuters, particularly during the peak hours. Regular interstate and suburban services for passengers remain suspended since March 21 due to Covid-19 and SWR is only operating skeletal services now.
SWR had earlier cited congestion at major railway stations and tracks as an excuse not to operate an adequate number of suburban services.

demand for inter-state travel reduced due to the virus scare, many people want the railways to operate suburban services since they are cheaper and faster. Unlike Metro’s AC coaches, the risk of the virus spreading is much lesser in non-AC suburban train coaches. Thousands of people, particularly daily-wage employees from the city’s outskirts and neighbouring districts, are also affected because of the suspension of suburban services. Many are now relying on crowded buses and paying high bus fares to reach Bengaluru.
Rajkumar Dugar, convener, Citizens for Citizens (C4C), said: “The Halt station near the airport is nearing completion so the railways should introduce more trains to and from Devanahalli. SWR should operate trains from places like Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Cantonment, Hosur and Bangarapet towards Devanahalli so the entire city will be covered. This will also connect Metro stations at Byappanahalli, Yeshwantpur and City railway station.”
However, Bengaluru Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ashok Kumar Verma said: “We're now operating 20 pairs of trains. A decision to resume suburban services across the country has to be taken by the Union ministry of railways. We're ready to operate trains adhering to social-distancing norms.”
Bengaluru doesn’t have a dedicated suburban rail system unlike Chennai and Mumbai. The 148-km suburban rail project, which has been stuck for 37 years, was made in the 2018-19 Union budget, but the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs is yet to okay it.
The Centre allowed Metro services to operate from September 7 in a graded manner, but no decision has been taken on suburban train services.
“Many daily-wage workers from the city’s outskirts and Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur, Marikuppam, Doddaballapur, Ramanagara, Bidadi and Hosur were dependent on trains to reach Bengaluru, but are now forced to rely on buses and spend more on tickets. Techies can manage working from home but factory workers are the worst hit," Sanjeev Dyamannavar, a rail activist, said.
However, some passengers pointed out social distancing in suburban trains and railway stations is difficult since they lack access control systems like Metro and it's better to take a decision after the situation is brought under control.

Now slowly demand for starting suburban services is coming from everywhere including Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai & other places as well. It will be indeed a challenge to try and balance out the requests and increasing demand at the same time cases are also increasing and experts are saying that probably we have entered second phase.

As all regular trains are cancelled and few special only running, SWR can introduce some local trains on special basis between important stations. Like Ramanagaram to Bangarapet, Whitefield to Chikkabanavara, Kengeri to Yelahanka, YPR to Hosur, SBC to Devanahalli via Cantonment as well as via YPR, YPR to Doddaballapura, SBC to Tumkur, SBC to Kunigal, etc
