LMRC managing director Kumar Keshav has joined hands with UP's women power line (WPL) 1090 to keep the premises and transport safe for women.
Being a hi-tech public transport Metro train runs till late night. In Lucknow, it would initially ply between 6am and 10 pm and the hours would later be extended till 11pm. To encourage women, especially those working, to take Metro for commuting, the 1090 team has devised a special campaign to make women aware about various security arrangements by UP police, 1090 and LMRC within metro premises. This campaign will be on tracks from February onwards.
IG, WPL 1090 and IG PAC headquarters, Navniet Sekera told TOI, "Lucknow Metro has approached us to provide a special team of power angels to be deployed permanently at Metro stations for sensitizing female passengers about 1090's core theme—Chuppi todo, khul kar bolo". Girls, generally hesitate to complain about any misbehaviour or instance of harassment. "Our power angels will encourage them to speak about their experience and instil confidence in them to seek police help. The mere presence of power angels and women police in the station will make them feel safe", he said.
Special arrangement is being made by which a woman in problem may seek immediate help in a moving train by calling up train-operator through emergency calling installed in the each coach. Sekera said, "We will dedicate around three systems exclusively for attending calls of Metro operators. There won't be any waiting in the system as a dedicated team will provide rescue to female passengers of Metro on priority." Normally, complainants have experienced a waiting of 15-30 minutes on helpline, which would not be the case with Metro.
WPL has set a target to train over 1 lakh power angels by March 2017 for Metro safety. They will be in direct contact with UP police for instant rescue. WPL will begin distributing IDs to these power angels from January. These special police officers will be provided placards, stickers and pamphlets to make people aware about women safety on Metro premises. Hoarding will also be displayed around Metro corridor to sensitise people on same.
