At Makalidurga 1000 people had gathered around 08:00 am today to stop train No. 66524, a Passenger train running from Hindupur to Bengaluru.
The main demand of agitators was to restore this train service from the newly converted MEMU rakes back to its conventional rake. .Because of the agitation following trains were detained at enroute stations in Yelahanka-Dharmavaram Section:-
No. 11301, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus- KSR Bengaluru Udyan Express at Makalidurga for 115 minutes. 2.Train No. 17308, Bagalkot- Mysuru Basava Express at Gauribidanur for 88 minutes. 3.Train No. 17211,Machelipatnam-Yesvantpur Express at Thondebavi for 99 minutes. 4.Train No. 17603, Kacheguda- Yesvantpur Express atViduraswattha for 79 minutes. 5.Train No. 16331, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Thiruvanathapuram Express at Devarapalli for 56 minutes. 6.Train No. 18463, Bhubaneswar-KSR Bengaluru Express at Chakarlapalli for 62 minutes. 7.Train No. 56503, Yesvantpur-Vijayawada Passenger at Doddaballapur for 80 minutes. 8.Train No. 66524, Hindupur –Bengaluru passenger.
The congestion affecting Bengaluru & Yesvantpur major stations is attributed to a large extent to number of passenger services being run with conventional rakes & reversal of their engines at these stations affecting other train movements.Hence in the large interest of commuters for upgrading suburban services by MEMU introduction is being done by SWR.
It may be emphasized here that any train (be it conventional or MEMU) will have a limited carrying capacity and passenger safety must be observed at all cost.In this regard, the carrying capacity of MEMU is more since conventional coach train has capacity of 1500 while MEMU rake train can carry 1800 passengers as it has more standing space. The conversion of this train from conventional to MEMU rake is being done to cater to the increasing needs of daily commuters. The MEMU rakes have faster acceleration and deceleration and enable quick reversal at stations. It is with these advantages that in all densely populated Metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai, MEMU rakes are used. It is also pointed out here that the growing need of daily commuters from the nearby areas of Bengaluru to Bengaluru has been felt by the State Administration and Government of Karnataka also and recommended introduction of MEMU services.
