The incessant rainfall in the region had its impact on rail operations on the busy Gooty - Dharmavaram Sector of Guntakal Division of South Central Railway yesterday i.e.,
12th October, 2017. With continuous downpour, the section saw water flowing dangerously close to the rail track at two locations, between Kalluru - Pamidi and between Kalluru - Khaderpet from the early morning hours of yesterday and later overflowing the rail track itself.
Going into the details, information was received from the Gatemen, Shri Razack Vali at Railway Level Crossing No.144 and Shri Hariprasad

at Railway Level Crossing No.1 thatbetween Kalluru – Pamidi at around 06.30 hrs that water is flowing briskly close to the Railway track. Immediately, the Junior Engineer, Permanent Way, Kalluru was intimated to proceed to the spot and check on the position. In the meanwhile, Train No. 18463 Prashanti Express was safely escorted through the route at 06.45 hrs.
Basing on the information shared by the Junior Engineer, Kalluru that the water level was raising fast and a bank slip has occurred between Kms 244/0 – 244/9, the Senior Section Engineer of the section and the Assistant Divisional Engineer, Anantapur reached the spot at 07.50 hrs. on close scrutiny, they found that the water flow has risen to the cess level and seepage of water has occurred besides the railway track. Analyzing the need, a speed restriction of 20 kmph was imposed in the affected section.
But, more rain was in store (about 120 mm) in the surrounding mandals of Uravakonda and Vajrakarur, the catchment area of Penna River which presented a challenge situation. The flood water level rose still more to flow close to Railway Bridge No. 45 (Penna Bridge) at Km. 241/1-2. The Assistant Divisional Engineer too who was at the bridge site monitoring the flood water, allowed Train No. 12628 Karnataka Express to pass the bridge at a cautious speed of 15 kmph per hour at 09.30 hrs. It was observed that due to flood water, there was erosion of formation and bank slipping beside the abutment of the railway bridge no. 45. The affected track length was about 25 to 30 meters and about 40% width of formation was washed away, with the sleepers hanging precariously.
The Divisional Engineer, Central, Guntakal Division who rushed to the section on receipt of information about the damage caused to the rail line, in co-ordination with the Senior Divisional Engineer, Co-ordination, Guntakal immediately requisitioned required Men, Machinery and Material to undertake restoration work on a war footing. This was all the more important, since the Gooty - Dharmavaram section is one of the busiest corridors on the Zone, connecting Bengaluru and beyond on one side with Mumbai, New Delhi etc., on the other.
Shri Vinod Kumar Yadav, General Manager, South Central Railway inspected the rain affected section to analyse the impact of the rail damage and oversee restoration work. He was accompanied by the Divisional Railway Manager, Guntakal Division and other Officials,
Shri Vinod Kumar Yadav visited the affected Penna Bridge too. He advised officials to ensure undertake restoration works where ever needed by utilizing required men, machinery & material. He advised officials undertaking the work to closely monitor track strength in the section so as to ensure total safety in train operations. He also wanted that required facilities and amenities be provided to passengers on board the trains which were diverted / partially cancelled and also arrange for required Catering facilities etc so as to take care of their needs.
Immediately as soon as the water level started receding, the restoration work commenced on a massive scale at 15.00 hrs, by means of diverting the water flow upstream so as not to obstruct the work. A total of 8 Hitachi Machines along with a strength of 200 labour force were engaged for the work, towards which the required quantity of material i.e., sand, ballast, sleepers etc., was shifted to the work spots in the quickest possible time. The relentless efforts of the entire Railway workforce involved in the restoration work, who braved the tough work conditions, enabled complete the entire restoration of the affected Railway line in the section in a record time by midnight and the track was certified fit to commence normal rail operations at around 02.00 hrs (intervening night of 12th -13th October, 2017).
Around 46 trains were diverted on account of the track breach, but consequent to restoration of the rail line, several trains were put back to run on the original route itself, so as to minimize inconvenience to rail users. The General Manager was appreciative of the commitment of the railway staff, supervisors and officers for having brought the section back to normal in the shortest possible time, thereby enabling rail users travel more conveniently to their destinations.
