DEHRADUN: An MBA postgraduate at the top of his class, a pharmacy student and two ITI graduates — these four young and promising lives were cut short by a train doing a trial run on tracks that had been unused for over two years. For years, Shashipal had put together every penny from the dhaba he ran to put his son through business school. Mayur, 23, took that responsibility seriously. He got his MBA degree from the Gurukul Kangri University last year. Also from his university was Vishal, 24, a BPharm student, whose father works at the Nagar Nigam. Praveen, 22, whose father is a farmer, and Happy, 22, whose father is a contractual worker, had just graduated from ITI.

at the abandoned railway tracks in Jamalpur Kalan often, talking about government job openings and preparations for those. On Thursday, around 6.30pm, while they were engaged in discussions about their plans for the future, the train sped through the tracks, crushing them. “The train didn’t sound a horn, there are no walls around the tracks. Two big villages are right next to it, but there was nothing to indicate a train would suddenly run,” said Vineet Chauhan, corporator of Sitapur village, where all four were from.
On Friday, angry locals blocked the tracks for three hours. Three separate investigations have been launched in response — police have lodged an FIR on the basis of a complaint by the families, the Haridwar DM has ordered a magisterial probe which has to submit its report in 15 days, and the railways has ordered its own inquiry. But it offered a defence at the same time. “Train tracks are property of the railways. We don’t need anyone’s permission or consent to do a trial run,” said Moradabad divisional commercial manager Gaurav Dixit. “The trial was a planned one. Every security protocol was followed. The chief commissioner for railway safety, Sailesh Pathak, was on board the train. It was running at 120kmph and our trial was successful.”
The government has announced a Rs 2-lakh compensation for the families. “Four lives were lost. Rs 2 lakh won’t solve anything. We want a fair inquiry and punishment for the guilty,” said Sachin Chauhan, Vishal’s brother-in-law. Because for the families, it has been an irreparable loss. “Who will bring my son back? I am on the verge of retirement. He was trying so hard to land a job just to help me out,” said Pramod, Happy’s father. “Even if they were doing a trial, they could have scheduled it for midnight or early morning. Why after sunset?”
For those who knew them, it was a loss of youthful promise. “Vishal was an all-rounder. Losing a boy like him feels like a personal loss,” his professor, Rahul Singh, said. Professor VK Singh from the Gurukul Kangri University added, “Mayur was one of our finest. We were encouraging him to appear for higher management diplomas from IIMs. He would have cracked it, but the high fees had reined in his efforts.”

Considering the Sankranti festival rush, the South Central Railway (SCR) zone will run more than 30 special trains to ferry passengers from Hyderabad to multiple places in Andhra Pradesh from Saturday. "In order to clear extra rush during Sankranti festival, SCR will run special trains between Hyderabad - Visakhapatnam - Hyderabad and Secunderabad - Tirupati," said a railway zone official on Friday. As many as 17 Sankranti specials will depart to Visakhapatnam and Tirupati. Train number 07451 will depart Hyderabad at 10.15 p.m. and arrive at Visakhapatnam the next day at 10.50 a.m. This train has been scheduled from Saturday to January 16. En route, it will halt at the Sankranti extravaganza hotbeds of Bhimavaram, Guntur, Vijayawada, Kaikaluru, Akividu, Tanuku, Nidadavolu, Rajamundry and others. Similarly, the return train, 07452, from Visakhapatnam to Hyderabad will run from Sunday to January 16. Likewise, train number 07453 from Secunderabad to Tirupati will run on Tuesday, departing Secunderabad at 7.40 p.m....

and arriving in Tirupati at 7.50 a.m. The railway zone is also running 16 clone Sankranti specials between Secunderabad and Berhampur in Odisha. Train number 07449 will leave Secunderabad at 5.50 p.m. to arrive in Berhampur the next day at 12.05 p.m., from Saturday to January 16. In return, train number 07450 will depart Berhampur at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday to reach Secunderabad by 7.15 a.m. the next day. These special trains will throw a major lifeline to the festival enthusiasts who rush from Hyderabad to their hometown at a time when many private travel buses are yet to resume their operations like pre-Covid times. Likewise, Sankranti time is renowned for choked traffic on the Hyderabad - Vijayawada highway, which leads to the major festival centres such as Bhimavaram and other villages in West Godavari district. It remains to be seen how far the Coronavirus pandemic will affect the festival rush.

The long overdue proposal to redevelop the Ernakulam Junction railway station by building a modern station has got a shot in the arm, with the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) inviting request for quotation (RFQ) for the purpose.
The project to build a multi-rise building in the place of the existing station building is still in its preliminary stage. Private firms or a consortium of firms can participate in the bidding. The Thiruvananthapuram Division of the Southern Railway has already handed over the land where the present station is located to the RLDA. Now, it is up to the agency to take a call on tenders and execute the project, said a senior railway official.
Private

stakeholder(s) will have to ready a design which makes optimal use of available space, pool in funds and construct the building. The land will be leased to them for a particular period, and they will be able to make commercial use of whatever space the Railway does not need. But the Railway will operate the entire premises, since it owns the land, he added.
The project’s concept says the station ought to be developed to international standards, as a multi-modal transport hub. The amenities must be disabled friendly too, having acess ramps, lifts, and tactile flooring. There must also be seamless flow of passengers in all weather conditions. The structures must also be eco-friendly and must make maximum use of light and ventilation.
The RLDA, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, had earlier entrusted KITCO with the task of readying a report on amenities for passengers, eateries, multi-tier parking space for private and public transport vehicles, and a skywalk to the adjacent Kochi metro station (where too commercial space is available), apart from commercial ventures for which space could be earmarked in the building. The last date to submit RFQ is February 22.
. The Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division will involve with the project after the tender is awarded. On its part, the Railway is keen to extend three short platforms by a few hundred metres, so that they can hold trains having 24 coaches. The inadequate availability of lengthy platforms is one reason why express trains are held up outside the station, official sources said.

The administration of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand on Thursday wrote to the Indian Railways urging it to reconsider its decision to increase train speed from 35 kmph to 100 kmph while passing through the reserve to avoid wildlife casualties.
DK Singh, director of Rajaji Tiger Reserve said, “Taking cognisance of media reports regarding change of train speed while passing through the reserve, I have written to the railway authorities to reconsider the decision.”
“As per the norms of the Union environment ministry and the Nainital High Court, speed

limit of trains passing through Rajaji Tiger Reserve should not be more than 35 kmph as it is a wildlife sensitive area with regular movement. The train speed had been specially reduced to ensure that animals like elephants, leopards, tigers do not get killed by trains,” he added.
In 2015, the National Board for Wildlife in a standing committee had decided that, “Speed limit of trains shall be followed strictly up to 35km/h during night and 40 km/h during day time.”
In 2016, the Nainital High Court had ordered, “Forest department is directed to set up a monitoring cell to track movement of elephants and other wild animals and to inform railway authorities. There shall be coordination between the forest department and the railways. Railway authorities are directed to ensure that speed of trains should not be more than 30km/hr…”
Elephant deaths after being hit by trains are a major problem in the Rajaji landscape.
Last November, two elephants were found dead within three days in Lachiwala range in Dehradun in the state. Of these two, a 35-year-old female elephant was found dead in the range after being hit by a train.
Last year in July, a carcass of a three-year-old elephant was found in a gorge near Nakraunda area in Dehradun forest division after it was hit by a train.

This is something which was expected.
If You checkout the satellite view of dehradun haridwar track..U will get to know the forest area..
As we leave DDN..hardly after 6-7 km forest area starts and goes upto Doiwala..and after Doiwala, most part of route is through forests.
I dont think it would be possible to run train at 100 kmph and suddenly reduce the speed

MB division just clarified only 18km of tracks lie in Rajaji National Park PSR of 30km/h in night and 40km/h at day time there and will never be removed unless HC allows.Rest stretch speed never increased above 50km/h.Trains will be able to attain upto 100km/h now on rest of the stretch.
