Indian Railways (IR) has decided to restore its regular five digit number system for its trains. As on date, trains are being run as Mail/Express specials and holiday specials with prefix numbered 0 followed by 4 digits.
The decision follows a letter from the Coaching Directorate Railway Board dated November 12,2021 to all General Managers of each railway zone besides Konkan Railway.
It stated “ In view of the Covid 19 pandemic, all regular Mail/Express trains were being operated as MSPC (Mail/Express specials) and HSP (holiday specials). It has now been decided that

the MSPC & HSP train services included in the Working Time Table, 2021 shall be operated with regular numbers and with fares as applicable for the concerned classes of travel and type of train, as per the extant guidelines. This issues with the concurrence of the Passenger Marketing Directorate of Railway Board.”
For instance, special train number 02311/02312 Netaji express ( erstwhile Kalka Mail) will be restored to its regular number 12311 /12312.
The second class in these trains will continue to be run as reserved except in cases of relaxations, the circular added. The circular further said that “ no difference of fare either to be collected by Railways or any refund due to already booked passengers shall be permitted.”
The regular numbering of trains will be implemented after IR’s IT arm- Centre for Railway Information system (CRIS)- makes amendments to the reservation software. A senior railway official on the condition of anonymity said “ this circular has to be implemented on an immediate basis.” The circular however, is silent about trains which were a part of the Time Table during pre-Covid times but not a part of the Working Time Table 2021.
Covid19 related protocols for passengers will continue, the circular said.

Guwahati – Lumding section (180 kms approx) of the Northeast Frontier Railway is vital for railway transportation point of view. This section carries freight and passenger trains for Northeastern states like Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Nagaland apart from Upper Assam and South Assam districts.
Due to increasing numbers of trains, this section which was earlier a single line BG section, was facing operational constraints. To mitigate the problem, doubling of this section was sanctioned and work was started by dividing the section into various portions.
The Digaru – Hojai section of 102 km length was sanctioned for

doubling in the Railway Budget of 2015-16. The foundation stone of the project was laid by the then Railway Minister Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu on 10.11.2016. Construction of 11 Major, 73 Minor and 5 Road Over Bridges are involved in this section apart from 36 Lakh Cum of earth work. The revised estimated cost of the work is more than Rs. 2,136 crs.
A total of 50.87 kms were already commissioned during 2020-21. And now by doing comprehensive planning the entire section is likely to be made double line within the Financial Year 2021-22.
Once the doubling of the entire 102 km long Digaru – Hojai section is completed; the train operational capacity of this section under Lumding division will increase. The crossing time of trains can be avoided leading to reduction of journey time. More and more freight trains can be operated for states like Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Nagaland apart from Upper Assam and South Assam areas. Economic activities of these areas will also prosper with better connectivity.

The long-delayed doubling work on the Golden Quadrilateral‘s Mumbai-Chennai route has moved forward another step. Doubling of the Washimbe-Bhalwani section between Daund and Kurduwadi was completed today.
After missing several targets over the years, Central Railway had set a deadline of March 2021 to complete work on its territory. However, this target too was missed.
With this, completion of a final stretch of the 28.5 -km long Bhigwan – Washimbe section remains. Officials say formation works on this section are complete and the remaining works are at an advanced stage.

Completion within one yer and 6 months. This is seems to be a very tight deadline. Hope they are able to achieve the same.
But overall good as it will help in reducing fuel costs, reduce travel time
