By this year-end, the Statue of Unity to get Indian Railways connectivity! Soon, travellers visiting the world’s tallest statue- the Statue of Unity in the state of Gujarat will have a hassle-free train journey. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal recently said the national transporter is committed to complete the rail connectivity to the Statue of Unity by 31 December 2020. The Kevadia Rail Link project, once completed, is expected to give a boost to the state’s tourism activities. Currently, Indian Railways’ Vadodara, Bharuch and Ankleshwar stations provide rail connectivity to the iconic statue. Besides, the nearest airports to the Statue of Unity are Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and Vadodara Airport.
In the Budget of the year 2017, the Centre had announced the

gauge conversion of the Indian Railways’ Dabhoi-Chanod rail line. This rail line is now being extended up to Kevadiya. In the month of December 2018, the foundation stone for the Kevadiya station was laid by President Ram Nath Kovind. This railway station is being developed under the Kevadia Rail Link project and will be at a distance of just 5 kilometres from the world’s tallest statue. Thus, once the station is complete, it will be a huge relief for travellers traveling to the world-famous destination by Indian Railways.

Meanwhile, Goyal also said that the first station modernization cum development programme at Gandhinagar in Gujarat will be commissioned in the next two months. The Gandhinagar station is being revamped and modernized by the Indian Railways Station Development Corporation. Once the development works are over, the station will be at par with international standards and boast world-class passenger facilities. The station redevelopment project also includes a five-star hotel above the tracks, which will be run by the Leela Group. Besides Gandhinagar, the redevelopment of another upcoming world-class station- Habibganj station is also scheduled for completion in the next few months.

New Delhi: The Indian Railways has decided to do away with the pantry cars in long-distance trains and replace them with AC-3 tier coaches.
With the COVID-19 outbreak, special trains are being operated without pantry cars. Hence, the railway has decided to continue this system in post-COVID-19.
By discontinuing panty cars, the railway has estimated to generate an additional revenue of Rs 1,400 crore per annum. At present, over 350 trains are operating with pantry cars. All these pantry cars are functioning on a contract basis. Hence, the railway will not incur any

loss from removing pantry cars. However, thousands of contract workers will lose their jobs.
The authority has been planning to supply food prepared at base kitchens of major railway stations to passengers in long-distance trains. It is observed that passengers will not face any issues to get food with the launch of e-catering and food courts at railway stations.
IRCTC is in charge of catering in trains. The railway is also planning to establish base kitchens in more railway stations. Two major railway organisations, the National Federation of India Railwaymen and All India Railwaymen's Federation,, have welcomed the decision to remove pantry cars.
With the COVID-19 outbreak, the railway has already stopped distributing pillows and blankets in long-distance trains. Instead, passengers have been directed to purchase them from stations. Even after resuming regular services post COVID-19, the railway is unlikely to change this system.

I can see a lot of pantry staff guys are going to lose their jobs unless they get hire in base kitchens or someplace else by IRCTC. This Govt is suppose to create jobs not terminating existing ones.

But, this is temporary. It is due to covid-19 situation. They will get back their jobs again once the regular services start.

NEW DELHI: The "zero-based" timetable for all passenger trains, which is likely to see many firsts including the dropping of nearly 600 mail/express trains and doing away with about 10,200 halts including night halts, would be notified in the next couple of months.
As per the plan, around 360 passenger trains would be upgraded as mail/express trains and 120 mail/ express trains would be upgraded to super fast trains category. Sources said the railway ministry is finalising the plan and would be notified soon.
Railway board CEO and chairman V K Yadav told
...

reporters on Thursday that the new system will start as and when the national transporter resumes normal operation of trains. “I cannot give a specific timeline at this point of time due to the continuing Covid situation. It will depend on when we resume the normal services,” he added.
This change will also mean the schedule and frequency of all earlier time-tabled passenger trains will be rewritten. Yadav had told TOI on July 15 that the plan being prepared with the help of IIT, Mumbai was also aimed at introducing the concept of “dedicated corridor” or exclusive time slots for operating freight trains and also for maintenance.
The new initiative is likely to help improve the railways’ financial health as there will be significant cut in the expenses. The railways has been making huge losses on account of the passenger segment and the national transporter has been frantically trying to improve its revenue.
Sources said the railways would also do away with the practice of link express train service, which is also known as slip coaches or sectional carriages. These coaches are detached from the train at a station on way to its destination and these are later re-attached to another train to take the passengers to their destination. The railways plans to run separate trains rather than continuing the link service.
Another major highlight of the zero-based timetable would be a change in the departure and arrival time of trains. Officials said the focus will be to avoid odd hours such as late at night which cause huge inconvenience to passengers and visitors.

The Railway Board Chairman and CEO VK Yadav on October 15 dismissed speculations related to doing away with sleeper coaches. He said the aim of the railways is to make travel in AC coaches more affordable.

"We will continue with sleeper class coaches. There's absolutely no ambiguity related to it. We are increasing the speed of trains on the Indian railway network. Soon, trains on the New Delhi-Mumbai and New Delhi- Kolkata routes will run at 130 kmph. Work for upgradation of these tracks to enable trains running at 160 kmph has

also started. Since we are increasing the speed of the trains, passengers travelling will face discomfort in sleeper coaches. So, we have decided to make a new AC-3 tier coach and we will introduce it next year. Our aim is to make AC travel more affordable for the citizens and fare will be between that of AC-3 and sleeper class," he said.

The news of Railways planning to do away with sleeper coaches had triggered a wave of speculations on social media.

Addressing mediapersons, Yadav informed that freight revenue up to October 13 has witnessed a jump of 11 percent compared to the same period last year with one of the highlights being loading of 126 automobile rakes, an increase of over 68 percent.

The protests by farmers in Punjab have led to a disruption in rail services. Yadav said the services will resume when the situation returns to normalcy.

"We are monitoring the situation and are constantly in touch with the state government and the Home Ministry on this issue. At any power plant, the situation is not so critical and whenever we feel the situation is conducive, we will resume services," he said.

Yadav also said the new timetable will be implemented when regular train services will resume and it is difficult to tell a time period when it will come into effect.

On the National Rail Plan 2030, Yadav said the draft report is ready and the final report will be out in December.
