Indian Railways sees major dip in earnings! In the second quarter of the current fiscal, the national transporter saw a dip of Rs 155 crore and Rs 3,901 crore in passenger and freight fare earnings respectively compared to the previous one. According to a reply to an RTI query filed by activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur, in the first quarter that is the period from April to June of the financial year 2019-20, Piyush Goyal-led Indian Railways earned a revenue of Rs 13,398.92 crore from passenger fares. The figure dipped to Rs 13,243.81 crore

in the July-September quarter. Similarly, in the first quarter, the national transporter earned an amount of Rs 29,066.92 crore from freight loading. While, in the second quarter, the freight earnings came down to Rs 25,165.13 crore.
According to a PTI report, the slowdown also affected ticket bookings, which witnessed a decline of 1.27 per cent in the period from April to September 2019, as compared to last year’s corresponding period. During this period, even suburban rail travel earnings showed a decline of 1.13 per cent as compared to last year.
In a bid to counter the slowdown, Indian Railways has initiated a slew of measures. Recently, the national transporter waived its “busy season” surcharge on freight traffic, implemented a scheme offering a concession to passengers of up to 25 per cent on trains with AC chair car and executive class sitting. Also, it launched initiatives to phase out 30-year-old diesel engines, generate non-fare revenue, cut down on fuel bills, as well as monetise its land holdings.
Last month, the Railway Board in a letter urged all the 17 zonal railways to take steps to counter the slowdown. A senior railway official was quoted in the report claiming that measures have been taken to offset such losses and Indian Railways will come out stronger.

No question of privatisation of Railways: Piyush Goyal

Replying to a discussion on Demands for Grants of the railways in the Lok Sabha, Goyal reeled out figures to claim that the Modi government has performed better than the UPA dispensation as far as boosting infrastructure and safety parameters of the national transporter are concerned.

During his hour-long speech there were frequent protests by Congress members, with their leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accusing Goyal of misleading the House. The minister was backed by his party colleagues.
Goyal also defended the decision to discontinue the practice a presenting a separate railway budget in Parliament, calling them "political budgets" which were used to sell dreams of new trains and railway lines to people for winning elections.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal Friday rejected opposition's allegation that the government is working to privatise the national transporter, but said the ministry will invite investments for new technology, lines and projects in national interest.
With several opposition leaders accusing the government of heading towards privatisation of the railways, Goyal asserted he had time and again rejected the claim and would reiterate that there was no question of privatisation.
"There is no question of privatisation of the railways. The railways cannot be privatised. However, if we have to increase the facilities in railways, we obviously need investments for it. We have taken a decision to encourage public private partnerships and we will also corporatise some units.
"We should invite investment in national interest if someone is ready to get new technology, new stations, projects and lines," the minister told the House.
He said track kilometre grew by 39,000 km in 64 years, while in the past five years it grew by 7,000 km. Similarly, he said the railways increased its running kilometre by 12,000 km between 1950-2014, while from 2014-2019, it grew by 5,000 running kilometre.
The work for Dedicated Freight Corridor started in 2007. From 2007 to 2014, they had not even managed one kilometre of track linking. We took on this work and in just five years, we have completed 1900 km of track linking," said Goyal.
He further claimed that during the Congress rule, not one coach was manufactured in Rae Bareli's Modern Coach Factory since 2007-2008 till 2014. The first coach was made in August 2014 shortly after the BJP came to power, he said.
"We want the MCF to increase its manufacturing capacity to 5000 and the trains coming out of there to go the entire world. We want it to be the largest factory in the world," he said.
Goyal said that between 2004 and 2009, around 206 accidents took place every year, while the number was 153 between 2009 and 2011. He said that during the BJP's tenure, it reduced to around 100 every year.
The minister also highlighted how the government had installed around 2,10,000 bio-toilet units in trains so far.
Hitting out at successive state governments in West Bengal, Goyal said that several railway projects had been held up because the state was unable to provide land to railways.
"The oldest project in West Bengal is running from 1974-75. The projects don't get completed because the government doesn't give us land. If they give us land, work will immediately start," he said, adding that similar problems were also faced in Kerala.
Goyal's reference to the alleged inaction of the UPA government in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts, which had taken place on July 11, drew loud protests from the Congress, with its members shouting "shame on you".
He asserted that the terrorists would have been given a befitting reply had Modi been in power. Goyal also credited the prime minister for his focus on the railways and said the growth the sector had seen was largely because of his vision.
"A tea vendor selling tea in front of trains during his childhood saw this country and understood the significance of the railways," said Goyal, referring to Modi's early days when he used to sell tea at a train station in Gujarat.
Responding to a question on problem in acquiring land in Maharashtra for the bullet train project, Goyal said there could be "little delay" in completion of bullet train project due to delay in land acquisition in Palghar.
"This government is a sensitive government and is in discussion with tribals for acquisition of land. The government wants to acquire land without offending those who own it. And is trying its best to complete it in time," he said.
Talking about safety of rail bridges in the country, Goyal said before going to sleeping, every railway minister used to pray about safety of bridges as some of them are very old. The government on regular intervals audit the safety of rail bridges across the country and do the needful, he said.
Speaking about the budget announcement that Rs 50 lakh crore will be needed as investment in the railways till 2030, Goyal said that from 2009-2010 Rs 2,107 crore were allocated for the protection and safety of purposes that has been increased to Rs 5,690 crore this year.
He said that investments will be needed in high density networks, dedicated freight corridors, modern signalling, 100 per cent electrification and that funds will be brought in through the PPP mode.
The minister also said that 99 members had taken part in the discussion and he has tried to answer their questions and demands in around 140 pages.
"I will reply to all the members through personal letters and address their queries," he said.

In a shameful act, a trail of destruction was left aboard the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express train, just four months after the popular intercity express train service got new modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, with upgraded features.
Indian Railways is upgrading its trains, but do we really deserve better? In a shameful act, a trail of destruction was left aboard the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express train, just four months after the popular intercity express train service got new modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches, with upgraded features. The upgradation had cost Indian Railways around Rs 38 crore. According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the vandalism and theft left the Central Railway zone, under which the train is operated, with a repair bill

of around Rs 9 lakh. Not only that, the report said that this amount excludes cost of paint needed to gloss over hundreds of paan stains and other signs of defacement.
While revealing the extent of the vandalism, a railway official stated these damages; damaged upholstery of 1,016 armrests, 536 wrecked armrests, stolen knobs of 513 snack tables, 179 torn magazine holders, 86 broken handles to recline seats, 27 ruined curtain pieces. Other than these, 50 health faucets, 43 washroom mugs, 25 taps, 37 flush valves, 17 dustbins, and 15 mirrors were stolen, the report said. Also, 23 vestibule doors were damaged and 1 centre table vanished.
According to railway officials quoted in the report, it has almost become a practice among railway passengers to ruin newly introduced railway services and facilities. Last year, in the month of May, during the debut run of Mumbai-Goa Tejas Superfast Express train, several headphones were stolen by passengers. Also, there were reports of infotainment displays being damaged on the train, which was launched with aircraft-like features along with many modern conveniences such as LED screens, Wi-Fi service as well as tea/coffee vending machines.
Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations officer, Sunil Udasi said that if these acts of vandalism continue, it would be difficult to maintain the rake to a reasonable standard. The Central Railway appealed to railway passengers to help them curb vandalism and to maintain the service, he added.
The new modern rake of Panchavati Express train was introduced on May 9 this year. It has 21 coaches, including 3 air-conditioned chair compartments, and also it is comparatively faster and safer than normal rakes with the capacity to hit a speed of 130 kmph, the report stated.

We are so habitual of using abbreviations and slangs that sometimes we forget the full forms, don't we? More often than not, we end up scratching our heads to recall the full form of some abbreviations that we use almost daily. This Kaun Banega Crorepati contestant Somesh Choudhary reminded us of this recently.

Railway employee, Somesh Choudhary didn’t know the full form of PNR (Passenger Name Record). He had to exhaust his audience poll lifeline for this question.
Nevertheless, Somesh Choudhary has so far won Rs 25,00,000. He used three out of the four lifelines. He will now continue the game in the next episode. He has so far faced 13 out of 16 questions.

However, he was quite an interesting contestant on the show. He loves banana so much that Amitabh Bachchan arranged for a basket full of bananas for him. He also narrated the story on why he loves bananas, and it was undoubtedly hilarious. He also shared that with the prize money, he wants to fulfill his elder brother’s dream who wants to become a singer.
About his job, he said, that while sometimes people give him a lot of respect, other times they diss him and get involved in a tussle with him.
It was quite an entertaining episode. Kaun Banega Crorepati airs on Sony TV at 9 pm.

Indian Railways is addressing the biggest complaint that passengers have with its trains – toilets! The national transporter has often faced criticism for stinking toilets, especially in long-distance journey trains. While part of the blame lies in the way people use toilets, the ageing coaches of trains definitely need better amenities. have better toilets. For one, Indian Railways plans to install bio-toilets in all its trains by the end of March 2019. This move is aimed at keeping tracks defecation free and is an environment-friendly step. As part of Project Utkrisht, Operation Swarn and other initiatives of Indian Railways, toilets in almost the entire fleet of passenger coaches will get a facelift. We take a look at the top 5 ways in which Indian Railways will address the problem of stinking toilets:
1. Aircraft-like toilets: One noteworthy step towards modular stink-free toilets would be the installation of bio-vacuum toilets in 500 LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches. A railway ministry official told FE Online that contrary to the perception that Indian Railways is rethinking its decision to install bio-toilets, it is only the the top part of the toilet system which is being replaced. “There are two parts to a toilet system, the squatting pan and then the storage tank. The storage tank is the bio-digester, which will continue to be fitted on trains. It is only the squatting pan which will be changed to a vacuum-based flushing system,” the official said. Toilets on Indian Railways trains are often choked because people dump garbage and plastic into them, he added.
According to Indian Railways, it was noticed that despite a lot of water being used, efficient flushing does not happen in train toilets. To bring in greater efficiency, LHB coaches will now be fitted with air-pressure assisted bio-toilets. For now Indian Railways will fit bio-vacuum toilets in 500 LHB coaches. The vacuum system of flushing will be similar to the one used in aircraft. The system uses almost 1/4th the water and is more efficient. The bio-vacuum toilets will be fitted in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Mail/Express trains. Trains from Eastern, Northern and Western Railway have already been identified for the same. ICF design coaches will get a 2-stage flushing system.
2. Better ventilation in toilets: In the case of ICF-design coaches, Indian Railways plans to put venturi-type ventilation system on the floor. This would involve installing two pipes – one for inflow of air and the other for outflow – hence ensuring better ventilation. Also, toilets will have ventilation outlets fixed at the bottom of the toilet door. Indian Railways will also install exhaust fans on the side wall of the toilets.
For LHB coaches, ventilation outlets will be fixed at the bottom of the toilet door and the capacity of the exhaust fan will be increased. Additionally, toilet windows will be fixed to allow for better air flow. AC coaches will also get odour control systems.
3. Modular FRP toilets: According to the official FE Online spoke to, 6,000 ICF-design coaches that are yet to go for a mid-life refit will get modular FRP toilets, similar to those in LHB coaches.
4. Toilet choking: Indian Railways is also looking to address issues of toilet choking on a priority basis with the help of on-board housekeeping staff. Increasingly, toilets will be cleaned every two hours in trains.
5. Under Project Utkrisht, which aims to upgrade as many as 140 rakes of ICF-design Mail/Express trains by March 2019, the PVC flooring will be replaced in toilets with epoxy flooring. The step is aimed at preventing formation of water puddles. Apart from these 140 rakes, the proposal for upgrading 500 more ICF-design rakes under Project Utkrisht is already under work
