On September 13, 2007, the SSC Ultimate Aero was crowned as the fastest production car in the world by averaging 256.14 mph (412.22 km/h) during the two opposite direction passes. The title for the world’s fastest car has changed hands a few times in this 13-year interval, with the current official record holder being the Koenigsegg Agera RS with a velocity of
277.87 mph (447.19 km/h).

There has been a lot of debate whether the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ should be included in this top speed duel, but the consensus is the hypercar from Molsheim doesn’t meet the criteria. Even though it reached 304.77 mph (490.48 km/h), the attempt was done in only one way rather than in opposite directions. Bugatti explained why the W16 longtail didn’t go both ways at the Ehra-Lessien test track as per the Guinness World Record rules, but that doesn’t really matter now.

Why? Because there’s a new speed demon in town and it’s called the SSC Tuatara. On the same stretch of the State Route 160 outside of Las Vegas near Pahrump where the Agera RS made history in November 2017, the hypercar named after a reptile smashed the world record for the fastest street-legal production car. On October 10, SSC North America put professional racing driver Oliver Webb behind the wheel of the Ultimate Aero successor in an attempt to dethrone the Agera RS and Chiron Super Sport 300+.

Using a production car on street tires and running on non-race fuel, SSC averaged a mind-boggling 316.11 mph (508.73 km/h) following two runs in opposite directions, one at 301.07 mph (484.53 km/h) and the other at 331.15 mph (532.93 km/h). Still not impressed? Well, Oliver Webb said it was “still pulling well” and “wasn’t running out of steam yet,” adding it could’ve gone even faster if not for the crosswinds.

The Tuatara also managed to improve additional speed records previously held by the aforementioned Agera RS. SSC is proud to say it set a new record for the fastest flying mile on a public road, at 313.12 mph (503.92 km/h), and the fastest flying kilometer on a public road, at 321.35 mph (517.16 km/h).

Needless to say, that 331.15 mph (532.93 km/h) absolute top speed we mentioned earlier was enough to claim the title for the highest speed achieved on a public road. Oliver Webb said the hypercar gained nearly 20 mph (32 km/h) within the last five seconds, further suggesting there was still room for more.

SSC North America organized the record-breaking attempt by the book, using a certified GPS measurement device and having two world-record sanctioned witnesses on-site for verification. About 15 satellites were used on average by the measurement device to accurately determine the Tuatara’s impressive acceleration and speed during the two runs that took place within one hour.

These Two Will Try To Beat The Tuatara:

As a quick refresher, the Tuatara is motivated by a twin-turbo 5.9-liter V8 flat-plane crank engine that pumps outs 1,750 horsepower when it feeds on E85. Switch to 91 octane and it still produces a colossal 1,350 hp in a mid-engined hypercar that has a dry weight of 2,750 pounds (1,247 kilograms) and a drag coefficient of 0.279.

Production is capped at 100 cars and customer deliveries are underway, with pricing kicking off at $1,625,000 and maxing out at $1.9M for the fully loaded variant with the High Downforce Track Pack.

With Bugatti officially retiring from chasing top speed records, it only leaves Hennessey with its Venom F5 and Koenigsegg with the Jesko Absolut to try and beat the Tuatara.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, Bengaluru, has given statutory clearance for operation of electric locomotive hauled passenger and freight train services on the newly-electrified Thanjavur-Tiruvarur broad gauge section.
The authorisation from K.A. Manoharan, the CRS, came a few days ago after the officer conducted an inspection on January 31 on the nearly 55-km Thanjavur - Tiruvarur electrified stretch followed by a speed trial by travelling on board a special train hauled by an electric locomotive.
The CRS has given a set of stipulations to be adhered to by the railway
administration. This includes a direction to operate freight trains for a period of one week prior to introducing passenger trains so that the operation and working of the new installations were established, said an official communication from the CRS to the General, Manager, Southern Railway, the Tiruchi Railway Division and the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) which executed the overhead electrification project.
The Railway authorities were directed to put up general “caution notices” regarding danger of high voltage traction wires, at entrances to railway stations. The CRS should also be informed of the date of introduction of electric traction for public carriage of passengers and freight trains on the section.
The Thanjavur - Tiruvarur single line electrification work is part of the Tiruchi - Thanjavur - Tiruvarur-Nagapattinam - Karaikal overhead electrification project being executed in stages by the CORE at a cost of around ₹200 crore. Overhead electrification has already been completed on the double line stretch from Tiruchi to Thanjavur.
A senior CORE official told The Hindu on Friday that power supply from Tangedco to the newly constructed traction sub station at Thanjavur Junction was expected soon. The official said overhead electrification works on the last stretch from Tiruvarur to Karaikal was apace and would be completed before March. Freight and passenger trains from and to the port town of Karaikal were currently being hauled by diesel locomotives.
After completing the electrification works up to Karaikal, CORE would take up overhead electrification on the nearly 10 -km stretch from Nagapattinam to Velankanni.The official said foundation works have already commenced on this section and the electrification was expected to be completed by June.
The Railway Board has also accorded sanction for electrification of the Nidamangalam - Mannargudi stretch falling under the Tiruchi Railway Division.

With overhead electrification works completed in the Thanjavur – Tiruvarur broad section, the stretch is now set for mandatory inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Bengaluru. The Commissioner of Railway Safety will inspect the electrified Thanjavur – Tiruvarur section on January 31 by travelling on board a special train. The electrification works has been carried out by the Central Organisation For Railway Electrification (CORE).
A senior CORE official told The Hindu on Tuesday that the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) would commence the inspection from Thanjavur Junction by travelling
in a special train. He would be accompanied by top officials of the Southern Railway and Tiruchi Railway Division besides senior CORE officials.
The Commissioner of Railway Safety would examine all aspects relating to overhead electrification works in the nearly 55-km stretch from Thanjavur to Tiruvarur. He would conduct a speed trial run the same day from Tiruvarur to Thanjavur by travelling in the special train which would be hauled by an electric locomotive.
The speed trial run would be conducted at 90 km per hour which is the permitted speed in the Thanjavur – Tiruvarur single line section. The inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety comes after the CORE officials submitted relevant documents pertaining to completion of overhead electrification works in that stretch.
Only after obtaining statutory sanction from the Commissioner of Railway Safety would electric locomotive hauled trains be operated in the Thanjavur - Tiruvarur section. Presently, passenger and freight trains in the Thanjavur - Tiruvarur- Nagapattinam section were being hauled by diesel locomotive.
The Thanjavur - Tiruvarur electrification work is part of the Tiruchi - Thanjavur - Tiruvarur - Nagapattinam - Karaikal overhead electrification project being executed by the CORE at a cost of around ₹ 200 crore.
The CORE had already completed electrification in the double line stretch from Tiruchi to Thanjavur. The Commissioner of Railway Safety had already accorded mandatory sanction for operation of electric loco hauled passenger and freight trains in the Tiruchi - Thanjavur broad gauge section.
The CORE is simultaneously carrying out the electrification works in the final portion from Tiruvarur to Karaikal via Nagapattinam. The official said the project up to Karaikal was targeted for completion by March.
The CORE would thereafter take up overhead electrification works in the smaller sections from Nagapattinam to Velankanni and in the Nidamangalam - Mannargudi broad gauge stretch following sanction from the Railway Board, New Delhi. The stretch from Nagapattinam to Velankanni was expected to be completed by June. Tenders would be floated in the coming months for electrifying the Nidamangalam - Mannargudi section, the official said.

good news for Thanjavur and Tiruvarur people as after CRS many train on Tiruchy-TVR section can be hauled by elocos and hopefully by june or july 2020 trains can be hauled by elocos on TVR-NGT-KIK route also along with NGT-VLKN section also but electrification work on VM-Mayiladurai-TVR section should also complete so that trains like kamban express can run with end to end elocos
