15 pairs of trains to run from May 12; only AC coaches would be run and fares would be equal to that of Rajdhani trains.
The Indian Railways on Sunday said it planned to restart passenger services in a phased manner — initially with 15 pairs of trains — from Tuesday onwards, almost 50 days after the services were stopped amid COVID-19 lockdown.
The announcement comes even as the Centre has extended the lockdown till May 17 to contain the spread of the virus.

begin with, the 15 pairs of trains, meaning a total of 30 return journeys, would be run as special trains from the New Delhi station connecting Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi.
Following this, the Railways would start more special services on new routes, “based on the available coaches after reserving 20,000 coaches for COVID-19 care centres and adequate number of coaches being reserved to enable operation of up to 300 trains every day as ‘Shramik Specials’ for stranded migrants,” said an official statement.
The reservation for these trains would start on May 11 from 4 p.m. and would be available only on the IRCTC website. Ticket booking counters at stations would remain closed and counter tickets, including platform tickets, would not be issued.
“Only passengers with valid confirmed tickets will be allowed to enter the stations,” the railways said. It would be mandatory for passengers to wear face cover and undergo screening at departure. “Only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to board the train,” it said.
AC coaches
A Railway spokesperson said only AC coaches would be run and the fares would be equal to that of equivalent Rajdhani trains.
Details of the train schedule along with more details would be issued to due course.
In a separate release, the Railways said it had run a total of 366 ‘Shramik Special’ trains till Sunday afternoon. These trains had ferried migrants to Tiruchirappalli, Titlagarh, Barauni, Khandwa, Jagannathpur, Khurda Road, Prayagraj, Chhapra, Balia, Gaya, Purnia, Varanasi, Darbhanga, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Jaunpur, Hatia, Basti, Katihar, Danapur, Muzzaffarpur and Saharsa.
“In these trains, a maximum of around 1,200 passengers can travel observing social distancing. Proper screening of passengers is ensured before boarding the train. During the journey, passengers are given free meals and water,” the railways said.

IN BRIEF:
Get set to take a train ride to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in 30 minutes, bypassing all the traffic on Airport Road, in less than two months. A halt station is coming up right at the KIA boundary, ready for completion by the first week of February.
In the next 15

days, work on a 600-metre platform is likely to the completed. Funded and executed by the Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), the halt station has already been approved by the South Western Railway.
Once commissioned, the halt station — located on the north western periphery of the KIA campus — will be linked to the KIA terminals by shuttle buses. BIAL has already announced that it will operate its own shuttle services to help commuters and airport workers cover the 3.5-km distance in less than 10 minutes.
Currently, only three trains ply on the single-track railway line passing through the proposed halt station.
One train ply between Channapatna and Kolar, a second train linking Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Bengaluru City, and a third between Devanahalli and Yeshwantpur.
The Railways recently approved a fourth train, a DEMU service, linking Whitefield, Chikkaballapur and Kolar. This is expected to commence its service within a week.
“Four trains up and four trains down will be a good beginning. This line’s capacity can be doubled if a crossing facility comes up either at the KIA halt station or Doddajala,” says urban rail analyst Sanjeev Dyamannavar.
The Railways have reportedly proposed electrification of the Yelahanka–Devanahalli line along a 30 km stretch. Once this project, estimated to cost about Rs 30 crore, is completed, more trains could be introduced. “New services during the rush hours and around 7 am, 3 pm and 11 pm, will benefit both airport staffers and commuters,” he notes.
Although a Metro link to the airport has been proposed, it could take years. But once the Baiyappanahalli rail terminal opens, a train service to Devanahalli via KIA halt station could help commuters switch from Metro to a dedicated airport train.

There should be hourly services from KJM/ Whitefield and YPR to airport halt station/ Devanahalli round the clock. What purpose is served with just 4 trains in 24 hours? Can anyone alighting at airport rely on such services to reach city?

Or what they should do is since this train is being advertised as a train for airport bound passengers they should open a Railway UR ticket counter at KIA.And feeder buses should be provided by BMTC from KIA to Yelahanka Railway station

Right, unless there is bus facility available after midnight at 1:30 am, this commuter train will not be much useful, same buses can drop passengers also to Ynk station for return train at 2:30 am to Mysuru.

If BMTC, SWR and BIAL jointly work, they can introduce bus service from Yelahanka railway station at regular intervals. But BMTC will lose revenue of 250 rupees per passenger. So they will not do. SWR should run few passenger trains to YNK, which is totally not acceptable to them. BIAL is not bothered about how passenger reach or leave airport.
So common man like you and me have to suffer by paying ₹ 800

for travel from Bangalore airport to Mysore, whereas if trains are run from Yelahanka or Dodbele, would have costed less than ₹150.
So, travel via Bangalore airport is to get a hole in your pocket.
