Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the New Rewari-New Madar section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and flagged off the world’s first 1.5-km-long electrified double stack long haul container train.
Mr. Modi said the project was part of the mission to modernise the country’s infrastructure and was being seen as a game changer for the India of 21 century. The section, which became operational after a hard work of five to six years, would be beneficial to farmers, industrialists and businessmen in the National Capital Region, Haryana and Rajasthan. ... more...
The corridor would lead to the development of growth centres and points in several cities, creation of job opportunities and conditions attracting more investments. It would give a new fillip to the local industries and manufacturing units by providing them faster and cheaper access to the national and international markets. They would get easy access to the ports in Gujarat and Maharashtra, he noted.
A portion of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, the New Bhaupur-New Khurja section was started last month and through it, farm products were being transported from Punjab and coal from Jharkhand was being supplied to the National Capital Region, Haryana and Punjab. Compared to the previous freight train average speed of 25 km/hour, the maximum of 90 km/hour had now been achieved, Mr. Modi pointed out.
In all, 133 railway stations in nine States would be impacted by the Dedicated Freight Corridor. New multi-model logistic parks, freight terminals, container depots/terminals, parcel hubs and other big facilities would be developed at these places. It would not only benefit villages, farmers, the poor and the small businesses, but also attract big manufacturers, he observed. Infrastructure modernisation
The modernisation of infrastructure would further improve the national economy, by ensuring growth in the allied sectors and creating employment opportunities. With the launch of the double stack long haul container train between New Ateli in Haryana and New Kishanganj in Rajasthan, India had also entered the club of nations with such high capabilities, he stated.
Given the rapid infrastructural expansion, all the Northeast State capitals would soon be linked to the national rail network. The work of indigenously developing high-speed tracks was also under way.
Earlier, the Prime Minister listed several initiatives, including a digital payment of ₹18,000 crore to farmers under the direct benefit transfer scheme, national common mobility card and driver-less metro in Delhi and light house projects in six cities, taken by the government in the past couple of weeks, to highlight the speed with which important projects were being implemented despite the COVID-19 induced crisis.
said the letter came following complaints that the three-language formula was allegedly not being followed strictly by the Konkan Railway.
“The use of Marathi language is mandatory along with that of English and Hindi languages in the Union government offices in the state as per the Union government’s tri- language formula,” the letter said.
Accordingly, Marathi must be used along with Hindi and English on the signages, advertisements and in the press releases, it said.
The Rajbhasha department of the central as well as the State governments has apprised the Railway Board of the decisions taken regarding this from time to time, the letter added.
The Konkan Railway operates train services on a 756-km long route between Roha near Mumbai and Thokur near Mangalore.
This route passes through three states of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. It runs through one of the challenging terrains that is dotted with several rivers, gorges and mountains.

On Thursday, the Central Railway and the Western Railway, in a joint press release, extended the permission given to them.
According to the release, the Railway Ministry has approved the Maharashtra government’s request made on December 2 for allowing lawyers practising in different courts and registered clerks of advocates to travel in the special suburban trains “till further advice“.
“It is requested that travellers who have been permitted to travel by suburban trains should follow medical and social protocols as mandated for COVID-19. Others are requested not to rush to stations,” the release said.
The lawyers were earlier allowed to travel on all working days only during non-peak hours up to 8 in the morning, between 11 am to 4 pm and 7 pm onwards.
At present, the railway authorities are operating special suburban services for essential services staff, including Maharashtra and central government employees.
The Indian Railways has banned the recruitment of Telephone Attendant cum Dak Khalasi (TADK), better known as ‘Bungalow Peons’. Curtains were drawn on the age-old tradition of allowing senior Railways officers to nominate a person to be appointed as peons to work in their residences or camp offices.
Despite stiff resistance from Railways Officers’ Associations from across the country, the Ministry of Railways went ahead with its plan to end the practice, and also directed General Managers of Zonal Railways and other establishments to review existing posts, sources in the Southern Railway... more...
said on Thursday.
In an order issued on December 1, 2020, the Ministry of Railways said the engagement of “fresh face substitute as TADKs” would be discontinued with effect from August 6, 2020. Existing posts and incumbent TADKs would continue and all issues relating to their service conditions and regularisation shall be governed by existing policy prevalent over Zonal Railways.
As regards posts of TADKs currently vacant, General Managers were told to review requirement/necessities for continuing with such posts keeping in view operational and functional considerations. “Alternatively, these posts may also be filled by regular employees, from any unit in Indian Railways, subject to willingness of the employee and the officer concerned,” the order said.
Earlier, when the Railways announced a review of the policy on TADKs, Officers’ Associations across the country wrote to the Chairman Railway Board against the move. About 4,200 TADKs are working at the residences of Railways officers as on September this year. Bungalow Peons are handpicked by Railways officers for appointment on the basis of a prescribed criteria of age, qualification etc. They are categorised under Group-D and paid Level-1 pay matrix of the 7th Pay Commission, with starting pay of ₹18,000 plus allowances as admissible.
Though the Bungalow Peons are to be engaged in attending phone calls and record movement of files at the residence of Railways officers, there were allegations of their being ill-treated or abused. In some cases that were reported, Zonal Railways were told to investigate in accordance with the rules.
The move to review and do away with the concept of Bungalow Peons evoked stiff resistance from the officers. The Federation of Railway Officers Association in a representation said it led to a sense of “anguish and apprehension amongst railway officers’ fraternity”. Stating that a similar selection procedure existed in several Judicial and Civil administrations, the association said that “a TADK selected through the officer concerned imparted a sense of safety, confidence, trust and privacy for the families of the officers”.
