GUWAHATI: Train service from the rest of the country to the northeast, which had come to a grinding halt during the second week of this month due to extensive flooding, finally resumed after about a fortnight on Tuesday. The first goods train after resumption of services arrived in Telta at 14:25 pm on Tuesday, passing over the repaired section between Sudhani and Telta stations in Bihar safely.
NF Railway officials said though goods train services to the region have resumed, passenger trains will start rolling only from September 3.
Train services in parts of Bihar and West Bengal under Katihar and Alipurduar divisions of NF Railway were suspended due to large scale damage of the track in many locations.
"The portion of repaired track will be kept under very close observation under the passage of goods trains. With the movement of goods trains, the flow of incoming essential commodities to the northeast will be restored.
All trains in the affected section will ply at restricted speeds till permanent repairs are carried out," said chief public relations officer of NF Railway, PJ Sharma. NF Railway said the flood-damaged portion of the track on the up line, along with bridge no 133 between Sudhani and Telta stations, has been certified fit by its engineering wing on Tuesday, with a maximum speed of 10 kmph.
The total commercial loss of NF Railways due to the disruption has touched Rs 74.04 crores, apart from the amount which has been refunded to passengers, while the losses incurred by other departments are being assessed, said a NF Railway statement.
