Mumbai: In another case of misguided priorities and railway apathy, bed linen and towels worth Rs 71 lakh were stolen from 56 trains in the Mumbai division comprising Mumbai Central, Bandra and Surat, according to the Western Railway. Washroom fittings like mugs, taps and flush pipes were not spared either. This figures are from the year 2016-17.
Western Railway (WR) officials say they are aware about thefts in long-distance trains, but cannot stop using branded fittings and linen. “We are embarrassed to learn that bed linen and towels are stolen from air conditioned compartments,” said a senior official on condition of anonymity, reported The Hindu. The stolen items amount to some ridiculous figures as 1,998 blankets were stolen, 2,530 pillows, 14,190 pillow

covers, 81,190 face towels and 18,835 bedsheets were pilfered in the year. Approximately, 181 steel mugs, 815 taps and 280 flush pipes were stolen from trains.
Replacing white bed sheets with printed linen on trains has not deterred the pilferers either. “We give out the printed linen on just one train, but out of the 1,600 sheets, 125 have been stolen,” said another senior official who did not wish to be named either. The cost of each bed sheet is Rs 132, while a towel costs Rs 22 and a pillow Rs 25. Officials are clueless about when the thefts could be taking place. According to the railway rules, it mandates that every theft on a train should be reported to the police, and an FIR be registered. But there is not a single complaint till date.

Mumbai: Railway Protection Force has sent a proposal to the railway board for introducing spot fine to reduce the hawker menace on railway premises. This would ensure that the hawkers would not be able to return to the spot to conduct business. The railway board is yet to accept the proposal.
Officials said a spot fine of up to Rs 500 would act as a deterrent. The other ways could be confiscating their goods. “Confiscating the goods sold by hawkers would hit them financially. Spot fine would act as a strong deterrent to hawking, as many hawkers tend to return to their place after paying their fine amount in court,” said Sachin Bhalode, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner of Central Railway (CR). was a 30% rise in the number of hawkers prosecuted this year as compared to last year. Statistics from RPF revealed that at least 4,864 hawkers were prosecuted last year between January to March and at least 6,939 hawkers were prosecuted in the same period this year.
The hawkers are prosecuted under the 144 (a) section of railway act for hawking. They are usually found to be encroaching upon the railway premises of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Dadar and Kurla areas. During the anti-hawker drive conducted by RPF, it was found that the hawkers willingly come to court to pay the fine and return to hawking in the same area again. “It does not make any difference to hawkers even if they are fined Rs 200. It is also difficult to prosecute women hawkers in the evening as we cannot arrest them after sunset,” said Bhalode.

Mumbai: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) have beefed up security at all railway stations on Independence Day by increasing platform patrolling, a separate team for sabotage checking and monitoring of empty rakes late on Monday evening. The highest number consisting of 2,100 RPF staffers would be deployed at railway stations on the central line.
The RPF of central railway has divided the security measures into three parts, which includes trains, platforms and railway yards. A four member team each for platform patrolling and crime prevention would be deployed at every station on the central line. “The patrolling would be done by commandos on the railway platforms who will keep a track on suspicious persons entering and leaving the station. Anti-sabotage checks

will be conducted by the crime prevention and security team by using the hand-held metal detectors. This will be done in order to ensure safety against a bomb-attack,” said a senior RPF official of central railway.
As a part of anti-sabotage check, the empty rakes leaving the station and reaching the railway yard on the Monday night will also be monitored by the RPF staffer.

At least 100 Railway Protection Force (RPF) staffers are deployed at Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) as maximum number of footfall have been recorded on this station. On Tuesday, the train escort system will also be intensified and sniffer dogs have also been deployed for the security of the commuters travelling in local trains. “The RPF staffer will also check the luggages of the commuters with the help of two baggage scanners which are operational at CSMT,” said a RPF official.
As CSMT is considered a sensitive location, two Quick Response Teams (QRT) will be conducting a round-the-clock monitoring on each station. This team will be equipped with modern weapons which includes AK-47 rifles, bullet-proof helmets and jackets. “The QRT teams will be on a 12 hour bandobast on account of Independence day. They have been deployed for quick response in case of a terror attack,” said the official.
Measures taken
At least 125 railway police officials have been deployed on the western line.
Stations between Mumbai Central to Mahim will be closely monitored by the railway police.
The working hours of each RPF staffers have increased from eight hours to 12 hours on Tuesday.
Government Railway Police have deployed two police inspectors, two assistant police inspectors, one police sub-inspector and two QRTs at every station on both central and western line.

This weekend, work could begin on yet another statue of the Maratha king Shivaji — this one outside the railway station named after him.
There are five other statues of the Maratha ruler on public land across Mumbai — Gateway of India, Mumbai international airport, Dadar’s Shivaji Park, Juhu beach and Chembur — while one more has been planned in the middle of the Arabian Sea.
The newest statue will be built at the entrance of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, on the P D’mello Road side, and is estimated to cost the

state government Rs1.5 crore.
Officials said Union railways minister Suresh Prabhu will most likely be in the city on Sunday to lay the foundation stone of the statue. Sources said the statue will be designed by the JJ School of Arts, which has already suggested three designs to Central Railway authorities, who have sent it forward to the Railway Board for approval.
Government approvals for this statue comes 21 years after the Victoria Terminus was renamed after Shivaji. For years now, there have been demands for a Shivaji statue or build a memorial at the station, a CR official said.
“The statue is likely to be constructed within a year,” the official said.
According to the CR, part of Prabhu’s agenda during his visit is also officially changing the names of two stations — adding ‘Maharaj’ to CST and renaming the Elphinstone Road station as Prabhadevi.

Here's Why Indian Railways is Removing One Toilet Each From 40,000 Coaches
New Delhi: The Indian Railways has decided to remove one toilet each from close to 40,000 train coaches. The decision was taken to make space for food plates for passengers. Currently, the plates are kept near the toilet door, creating health and sanitation hazard.
This had been pointed out by a Comptroller and auditor general (CAG) report, which revealed serious lapses in hygiene.
According to the Railway’s plan, the toilets will be removed to set up a catering station in coaches. On June 13, the Indian Railways had started its ‘Mission Retro-Fitment’, which seeks to modernize old-style train coaches. There are around 40,000 such coaches, which will be redesigned over the next five years.
The latest move will mean that train coaches in India will have three, instead of four, toilets in them. The Indian Railways also uses around 5,000 modern coaches of German design, which already have catering stations. These coaches will continue to have four toilets each.
Till the 1970s, Indian Railways coaches used to have just two toilets each. The number was later increased to four toilets.

Since the reduction of one toilet in the coach ,In the western and Indian Toilets in the coaches the Washbasin have to be removed from the inside toilet room and kept outside.
So that the toilets are freed early by the passenger . One loss of toilet room in coaches need not be affected.
