The Indo-Bangla railway connectivity project through Akhaura (Bangladesh) – Agartala (Tripura) would be completed by this March, said a minister.
The 13 kilometres-long railway project would connect Bangladesh with India’s northeast and West Bengal through Nischintapur along the Indo-Bangla border to serve the purpose of trade and economic relations between the two countries.
"The work is almost completed. We are confident that the railway connectivity between the two countries would start by March," Tripura's transport minister Pranajit Singha Roy told the media.

used to be the railway link for Agartala during the British era. It also connected Chittagong Port in Bangladesh and Tripura.
The concept of the Akhaura-Agartala railway project came in 2010. Three years later, both India and Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the railway project along with other issues.
The project was started with an estimated expenditure of ₹968 crores. With its opening, this would be the first railway route from North East India to Bangladesh.

AGARTALA: The much awaited Agartala-Akhaura international railway project to connect Bangladesh railway track with North-East Frontier Railways is likely to be delayed by nine months, according to an assessment by IRCON International Ltd, the nodal organisation for the project. The railway link connects Gangasagar in Bangladesh to Nischintapur in India (10.6 km) and from Nischitapur to Agartala railway station (5.46 Kms). The project was scheduled to be completed in December 2020 and its status report, which was made available here on Friday, said the date is no likely to be September 2021.The report quoting Yogesh Kumar Mishra, the director of IRCON International Ltd which is one of the executing agencies of the project, said the construction work from Gangasagar to Nischintapur may be completed by September 2020. But the work from Ninschintapur to Agartala Railway situation is likely to be completed by September 2021.IRCON International joint general manager H K Singh said the...

cause of delay on the Indian side is due to the soil condition and the construction of a 3.1 km long viaduct. The condition of the soil is not very favourable for laying the track near Nischintapur on the Indian side. It(the soil) is marshy and soft, so we are doing many kinds of treatments. We have to build a viaduct, which is also difficult. So the project will be delayed , Singh said. The DoNER ministry is bearing the cost of laying the railway track from Agartala to Nischintapur and the Ministry of External Affairs from the border to Gangasagar in Brahmanberia district of Bangladesh. The cost for laying the railway tracks between Agartala to Nischintapur is Rs 580 crore and the executing agency is IRCON International Ltd. Rs 217.63 crore has been released for it and Rs 140.73 crore has been spent on it as on 31st July 2019.

Works on a 12.23 km India-Bangladesh new railway line are moving at a snail's place in both the countries, around a decade after Rs 972 crore project was finalised. The new target of end of the much expected project has been re-fixed in September next year. The Agartala (India)-Akhaura (Bangladesh) railway line would facilitate ferrying of goods to and from both the countries and greatly benefit India's land-locked northeastern states. Also, the journey time between Agartala and Kolkata, via Bangladesh, would be reduced by a third, from 1,613-km through mountainous terrain to a mere 514 km.The government-owned IRCON International Limited (IRCON), under the Ministry of Railways, has been executing the project, for which the DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region) Ministry and India's Ministry External Affairs (MEA) would bear the entire cost (Rs 972 crore) of the project on either side. "Work for the Agartala-Akhaura railway project was on. After the ongoing monsoon, the...

works would be stepped-up. The fresh target of completion of the project has been re-schedules in September 2020," a top IRCON official told IANS. The official refusing to be named said that linking with the existing Agartala railway station, of the 12.23 km India-Bangladesh new railway line, 5.46 km railway track would be laid in India (on the outskirts of the capital city Agartala) and 6.57 km railway line would be placed on the Bangladesh side. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb recently held a meeting with the IRCON officials and engineers led by Director (works) Jogesh Mishra and Agartala-Akhaura railway project head Raman Singla (Assistant General Manager) and directed them to complete the project at the earliest. The IRCON official said that on the Indian side, 3.1 km portion of the railway track would be elevated to avoid 26 acres of farm land and habitations. The IRCON, which has widespread operations in several states in India and in other countries, including Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nepal, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Afganistan, U. K. and Sri Lanka, is now also executing the 86.87 km long Khulna-Mongla rail line project between India and Bangladesh along West Bengal. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is the nodal agency of the Agartala-Akhaura railway project, which was finalised in January 2010 when Bangladesh premier Sheikh Hasina met then Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during her visit to New Delhi.According to economists, traders and leaders of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, economic activity between northeast India and Bangladesh would get a big boost after implementation of the railway project, which also figured during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Sheikh Hasina during his visit to Dhaka in June 2015."After the execution of the vital project, the growing trades and economic activity between the Northeastern states and Bangladesh would further increase benefiting both sides," Tripura University's (a central varsity) Head of the Economic Department Ashish Nath told IANS.He said: "All the previous rail links, existed till the partition of India and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) must be restored for the all round gain of the two countries." Currently, India and Bangladesh have four rail links with West Bengal. The existing railway line in mountainous terrain from Guwahati passes through Lumding in Nagaon district (in central Assam) and southern Assam connecting Agartala and parts of Manipur and Mizoram with the rest of the country. In October 2008, with the extension of the metre gauge track up to Agartala through southern Assam, Tripura became the first state capital in the northeast to be brought on India's rail map after the country's independence. Later, the metre gauge line was converted into broad gauge and extended up to southern Tripura's bordering town Sabroom, which is just 72km away from Chittagong international sea port in Bangladesh.

The decades-old railway bridges on the Akhaura-Sylhet route are in poor condition with repeated derailments, leading to fatal accidents at least seven times in the last three months.
The 177-kilometre-long Akhaura-Sylhet track crosses about 250 large and small bridges built in the British colonial era, according to the engineering department of Bangladesh Railway (BR).
The poor condition of the route is the result of decades long poor maintenance of level crossings and railway bridges. Among other issues, safety, uncertainty of arrival, delay on the route and the constant fear of an accident is

leaving passengers hesitant to travel on the route and contributing to a huge loss for the railway.
The safety issue of train passengers has come to the forefront following several accidents recently, including a fatal one on June 23 at Baramchal in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar, which left five people dead and over a hundred others injured.
Recently, a  Dhaka-bound Upaban Express compartment went off the tracks near Maijgaon Railway Station  in Fenchuganj of Sylhet, around 11pm on Friday. With an unsuccessful attempt at repairing the lines and a delay of almost four hours, the train left the station, leaving the derailed compartment behind at around 3pm, confirmed Station Master Samanta Das.
Regular passengers on this route expressed their frustration with the poor condition of the route and said that despite the 'Dead Stop' signs on 13 bridges, which instruct trains to stop completely before crossing, trains head for Dhaka and Chittagong without stopping at all.
Journalist Jahangir Alam, of Dakshin Surma upazila, says that thousands of train passengers face a high risk journey on this hazardous route.  He observed: "Parirchak and Maijgaon, these two areas between Sylhet and Mogla Bazar are most prone to rail accidents."
Sources said, five days after the infamous Upaban Express accident in Baramchal, Chittagong bound intercity Paharika Express was delayed for two hours due to a sudden landslide on the Baramchal Bridge.
On July 7, the Dhaka bound intercity Jayantika was disrupted when it ran into cattle on the tracks.
On July 19, two compartments of the same train service went off-track at Kulaura rail station, and the next day, the Dhaka bound Kalni Express went off-track at the same place.
Asked, Ataur Rahman, Manager of Sylhet railway station, couldn't confirm  the accidents and said the probe committee investigating the Baramchal accident might be able to provide a better perspective.
According to the railway schedule, six intercity trains -- Parabat, Jayantika, Paharika, Udayan, Upaban, and the Kalni Express -- operate on the hazardous Dhaka-Sylhet-Chattogram railway track twelve times a day. About 25,000 to 30,000 passengers use the rail route daily.

Diesel locos will stay in NFR forever because it is a border region. Railways have planned to deploy Diesel locomotives at border areas and fully electrify and convert all diesel traction to electric AC fit.
